I have never had much faith in media reporting of health studies and this doesn't change that. There is hardly a foodstuff or activity out there that doesn't cause or prevent cancer/dementia etc etc. according to the Daily Mail.

Despite my scepticism, I might point Mrs. D in the direction of this article nonetheless ;)

A LOT of it comes from an inherent misconception of what Science is about… People often think of it as some sort of discovery of ‘absolute truth’ , whereas , particularly in public health , its often about balance of probabilities , pro AND con.. with often no easy answer.... I confess when I read a health article ( in the press or online – or in things like ‘ running magazines’ ) I treat them all with a massive ‘ pinch of salt’ , or I would do if that wasn’t BAD for your blood pressure.

A good place to go on this is ‘Behind the headlines’ on NHS choices, where the ‘ headline’ is analysed properly, nhs.uk/news/Pages/NewsIndex...

I had to laugh at that bit of research. Bet the women of the world were rolling their eyes.

well I guess the women associated with some of the subjects in the research 'rolled their eyes' a lot too..

Anaverageman profile image
AnaveragemanGraduate in reply toRignold

Better safe than sorry is what I say. And talking about safe... after reading this paragraph, I decided to not share the article with the Mrs

"Last year, a study carried out researchers at the University of Montreal concluded that men who had sex with more than 20 women were 19 per cent less likely to develop the most aggressive form of prostate cancer."

Bet that article was written by a man! ;)

Anaverageman profile image
AnaveragemanGraduate in reply toAncientMum

well , the article doesn't say ( merely ' subbed ' as ' Telegraph Men's' section.. )

BUT lead researcher was a woman, a Dr Marie-Elise Parent

Id like you all to know that this reply originally contained at least two puns related to running and this article before I backspaced over the whole lot!

It says:

For men in their forties, a daily orgasm can reduce the risk of developing prostate cancer by over 20 per cent, according to new research.

And then:

Researchers found that men in the 40-49 age range who ejaculated at least 21 times per month were 22 per cent less likely to develop the disease.

So, a daily orgasm is not necessary! :-P

As for the photograph, I wonder what this guy is thinking with this kind of a look on his face...

Anaverageman profile image
AnaveragemanGraduate in reply toViaM

Maybe they measured it in February.. not in a leap year... which would be approx 21/28 = 0.75 orgasms per day (opd) which would round up neatly to 1 opd

*simples*

ViaM profile image
ViaMGraduate in reply toAnaverageman

0.75 is not an orgasm though, it is torture :-)

Anaverageman profile image
AnaveragemanGraduate in reply toViaM

and torture is a BAD thing then? ( just checking ;) )

Well i have two things to say about that, I guess though, if you have 3 or 4 successive ‘0.75’s, immediately followed by a’ 1’ that will make that 1 seem like a 9 or a 10? (in my humble opinion) Secondly, I am afraid I can’t comment on a ‘0.75’ I have little experience there, personally I find it hard restricting them to a ‘ low teens’ … but the disadvantage with THAT, is you may have blown your ' allowance ' for two weeks all in one go?

blimey, I thought this was a running blog, it gets better the more I find out...The article doesn't say if its more effective on your own or with someone else/ others... I wonder what the Kinsey institute would say?

Anaverageman profile image
AnaveragemanGraduate

It is.. OK so i stretched the term (slightly) to include ' exercise'.. I'm BAD...

As to Kinsey, Before he became a celebrated s3x researcher, Kinsey was a zoologist who studied and collected gall wasps When he died, he had collected an astounding 7.5 million specimens!! and he had the ' gall ( get it) to comment on OTHER people obsessions? lol “Men,” Kinsey once said , “are just bigger, more complicated gall wasps.”
