To my first 5k race! I'm only on week 4, but feel ready to out my name down for it!

My uncle passed away a couple of weeks ago, he had lung cancer from years of working down the pits. He was an awesome man and I loved him very much. I decided my first race should have some additional meaning for me - so, I'm running the Leicester race for life in his memory on July 5th :). Plenty of time to get the training done and increase my speed a little, but at the end of the day it's just about getting it done, no matter my time!

Just wanted to share as I am very excited 😎

Happy running everyone x

Good move! I signed up around wk4 or 5 for a race in July too and it's a great motivation to keep you going. After wk 9 you should be ready to do it and if you have a little time between C25k and the race you can use that time to improve speed. All the best for the coming weeks!

Brilliant! Good luck with the rest of your training and the race for life! Just imagine how good you're going to feel as you cross the finishing line after all your hard work!

My son suggested that I need to practice my "crossing the finish line" face as apprently I look dreadful when I get home from a run, he thinks it's more a grimace than a tired but delighted smile 😳 so each week he is going to help me get it right ! Hahaha kids eh?!?!?!

Ha ha maybe Laura should include some advice on the podcasts on how to work on the finishing face!

Morning! I have just done week 5 run 2 and I am also doing the Leicester Race for Life! 5th July for the 5k. I am also running for my late uncle. Do you fancy doing Park Runs at braunstone together after we graduate to build up to 5k? xxx

Hi beenal, yes I would love that, I don't actually live in Leicester itself I live about 12 miles out but that's not too much of an issue if I can sort child care out! It would be great having someone to run with and a few practice runs before hand! I choose the Leicester run because I'm on holiday for the loughborough one that is a bit closer to me and wanted to get a race under my belt before I go camping!

Def stay in touch x how did you find w5 run 2?

Beenal profile image
BeenalGraduate

It wasn't as bad as I expected but that's because I am a tortoise jogger as opposed to a hare runner! Yes keep in touch and we will definitely organise running together! How is it going for you? X

I'm glad it was better than expected for you, I know it's a big week in the plan x like you I'm a slow jogger I've had to run a couple of times on a treadmill and I run at around 4mph. So far I've found it all very good, not easy, but doable. And I get a great sense of achievement by overcoming my head, which tells me 1 min would be too hard, then 90 secs would be to hard then 3 mins then 5 mins - BUT.... so far I've done them all, so now I'm trusting Laura and working hard and I know I'll get there!

I am sure it will be a very special day for you. I did Race for Life a few years back in memory of my Dad who also had lung cancer. It was a very moving experience. am sure your memories of your Uncle will help motivate you through your training. Good luck.

Would be SOO tempted, personally, to rip off my race number theatrically after you finished.. rip it up.. and yell out, β€˜ I AM NOT A NUMBER’ !! lol but until then.. enjoy having it!! Gives you another β€˜ goal β€˜ to work towards

Hahaha I think I'll probably end up just blabbing away as just a couple of weeks ago I would never have imagined doing this and feeling as well as I do!

But saying that I may do that if I remember πŸ˜‰
