Painful shin: I need some Advice my shin really... - Couch to 5K
Painful shin
I had this problem at week 3, now on week 5 and doing ok. I got new trainers, stopped trying to run 'heel first' and now running more mid foot, got some compression running socks which are supposed to help, and used ice pack after the run (bag of peas!). Shin pain has now gone! I also left 2 days not 1 in between if I felt they needed it. You could also try pain relief / anti inflammatory gel on your shins. Don't give up, you can crack it and these things worked for me. Good luck!!
Oh crumbs Sounds like it could be a shin splint.. is it just on one leg?
I developed shin splints just as I graduated C25K and it put me off running for a while.
If you can afford it - I would recommend a gait analysis at a proper running shop. Sweatshop if there are any near you.
For a quick fix you could try some gel insoles which you can pick up quite cheaply. They helped me for a couple of months but I'm having to bite the bullet and get some new shoes now...
would agree with what has already been said more rest if required ,gel insoles etc all very good advise along with Gait Analysis etc ..
I'll disagree just a litle. Don't buy insoles and think they'll help. But do go to a running shop and get a gait analysis done, and then if the analysis shows you could benefit from insoles, then buy them. But it might show that actually you need less padding. or different padding. Or that your running style is perfect and has nothing to do with the pain (although... given that the shops doing the analysis make a living out of selling new running shoes, the number of times they recommend doing nothing is rumoured to be as rare as ISIS showing up to peace conferences in hula skirts).
It can also simply be a matter of the muscles in your shins needing to get a bit stronger, so maybe running on grass or a treadmill instead of asphalt or concrete for a while could help.
Don't overstride either or go too fast! Go slowly, speed is not required for C25k
I hope you feel better soon
An endorsement from me for Tomas's and misswobble's posts. definitely good advice.
