My ankles weren't bad but my calves in the first couple of weeks were torture. someone here advised loosening my laces which did help, but the pain didn't go away completely until about week3ish. It'll get easier x

Hello Janey83,

I'm on week 1 too, in fact I've just joined! I plan on going for a run later. I did a little bit of running last year (nothing big and only for a couple of months) but I used to find my lower legs and ankles got sore. But I have fallen arches so I'm not sure if that was the cause. I'll start off slow tonight!

If you haven't exercised for a while, your body will be wondering what the heck is going on, and there will no doubt be many niggles. Most of us had a few - with me it was my knees.

So long as you are not in proper pain (i.e. more than just aches from using muscles which haven't been used for a while), in which case you should stop and see your GP, the advice is to take extra rest days if needed, but keep on going gently and your body will gradually adjust to the new demands you are making of it. There are all sorts of strengthening exercises runners can do as well - they are all over the internet.

The body is an amazing thing, but it does need to build up gradually, which is what this programme does, so don't be tempted to bypass any of the stages because that is a sure way to get an injury!

Good luck, and keep posting.

Congratulations on getting started!!!

Not really sure about ankles but i am sure that some wise people will be along shortly to help you out.

I find that you will get the odd aches - nothing a bit of stretching, resting won't sort out though. However if your in real pain listen to your body and get it looked at. if its just i have exercised and my body felt it then then after a days rest you are usually ready for the next run. Good luck with your journey!!

I do boot camp 2 x a week & we do tiny bits of running & I'm always the slow 1! Really want to build my stamina! Think I will keep an eye on it. its just me getting used to it i hope lol! I will search for some strenghing exercises!

There's a running shop who check your in the right trainers for the way u run so may try. Defo my lower right leg!

Thanks for your replies!

Good luck all

Hi. Well done on getting started :) Can't really advise re the trainers. I just used what I already had and they seemed to be fine. Other people might recommend having a gait analysis done. For me it was my knees that suffered the most and sloping pavements and uneven ground were the bane of my knees! I used tubigrip to help support my knees on occasion which helped but I ended up doing knee strengthening exercises and then ankle strengthening exercises after I hurt my ankle. You might find doing something like that would help.

This was one of the sites I used for my ankles but you can find all sorts out there

foot-pain-explored.com/ankl...

And this one for knee exercises

The other important thing is to stretch those muscles afterwards :)

Happy running :)

well done on making a start Janey :D it does take a little while for you body and everything to get adjusted to running 3 x a week but all being well it should settle down :D

Hi Janey, Welcome to the board and this amazing programme !

There are bound to be a few aches and niggles at first as your body gets used to it but , but stretching after running and resting tend to sort most things out.

Good Luck, keep posting it really helps to keep you motivated ! xxx
