....what is this? I'm using Map my Run alongside the c25k programme to keep an eye on my progress, is there much difference? Any advantages?
Just finished week 3 day two. Laura went quiet on me at the end and I wondered where she'd gone, turns out I ran for nearly 5 minutes. I was thinking, "Laura, where ARE you?? That MUST be 3 minutes!" Oops.

In 2012 I cycled as my main sport, I used Strava to track my rides and record progress and it works well, BUT Strava also records your activities against other Strava users who have traversed the same route or bits of the route and lets you know where you are in the speed hierarchy for that particular road/hill/route.
The temptation is to try and go faster than everyone else or work your way up the tables and yes, dear reader, this is how I ended up having to stop using Strava, I was getting far too competitive and borderline obsessed with trying to keep my QOMs or beat particular people to the point where it just wasn't healthy. If you need competition to keep you focussed it's the app for you....
I really like Strava, Ali! It's free, it records runs easily, it compares times to previous runs, and tells you everything you need to know. You can share the info if you wish, or keep it to yourself. I like it so much that I'm considering going to Premium, after all it isn't very expensive!
Hi I had couch25k on an iPhone app and found it quite unreliable was actually running much further and longer than it said, would still recommend though for first few weeks, I use the Nike running app now which is more reliable in my case anyway
I think I was probably to blame, looking at Mapmy Run then switching back to the app I think I'd inadvertently pressed Pause. Will check out the Nike app too. A Garmin is on the wish list for when I've graduated from the programme so I can just switch back to my trusty old iPod.
There was a write up about Strava in the NYD parkrun report (Riddlesdown) as they've recently linked up with Parkrun and you can link your parkrun and strava accounts together, join up with other runners in your area, 'race' against them....
The report is here if you're interested.... parkrun.org.uk/riddlesdown/... ....the Strava bit is the orange bit towards the bottom.
I've recently started to upload my (fairly new) garmin records to Strava (so not using it to work out how far I've travelled, etc.). The bit I find useful is that it compares and calculates my 1 mile, 1k, 5k, 1/2 mile, etc., speed to my previous runs, which saves me having to work it out manually (I haven't found that feature on Garmin connect...might be there, but I can't find it) and displays it in a way that's easy to get on with (the online version, mainly). although not essential to the enjoyment of running, I find it interesting.
I use MMR too, as have been using it to log all of my activity since the start of my 'getting fit' efforts...I like it, but get cheesed off with the constant 'upgrade now' prompts! Also, found that both MMR & RunKeeper apps wander a bit off track, so tended to record me having run further than I had, so was ever adjusting the distances...I've found my garmin to be more accurate (as I'd expect).
There's also a C25k group on strava - I can see how, like henpen, I could end up competing with all of the other lovely runners on there, but I will be strong (and have noooo chance anyhow!!).
Now it's probably me being thick, but I can't work out how to put just my run onto Strava. I record in Runmeter, including my warm up/cool down walks. These vary in speed depending who I meet to gossip to That means the splits on Strava measure from the start, so the first km is half walk half run. I can't seem to get Runmeter to export just the run section even though I can view it on there. Any ideas?
Hi Allie. Strava is much the same apart from you can do cycling and other sports and follow people easier. It's free as well. I use Strava for cycling mainly but I've added my C25K to it as well. Hope this helps and good luck with the rest of the program. J
