Hi and welcome to the 4th week of the quest

We have an Admin forum here on HU and other forums were asking if location makes a difference to how we reply to posts. I know we have some people from all over the world on the forum but I think we have some from different countries right here on the quest. This time of year it make a difference to our advice to each other depending what weather we are coping with. Its a bit unhelpful for me to be talking about wrapping up and getting out there if your just coming into your hottest months of summer.

The internet is very good at making us feel close even though we could actually be thousands of miles apart. if you have got really bad running conditions don't forget to share even if they are different. we might feel a little jealous if your running in heat when we are shivering but its only in a good way.

What the quest is:-

The quest takes six weeks. You can join any time within that six weeks.

The main aim of the quest is to help you find a focus or goal that you would like to achieve by the end of the Quest period.

I ask that you will be a graduate or about to graduate to join the quest. The main reason I ask this is that while you are doing the program your plan is very structured so I wouldn't want the quest to interfere with that.

Most popular goals are:-

To run three times a week

To slowly increase distance

To train for a specific race

To add In Stretch and strength exercises

As you can see they are personal to yourself and it's totally your own choice.

Every week I will pin a new post where all the members of the quest can talk about how things are going.

So if you wanted to join all you have to do is put

I would like to join the quest, or count me in and then I would like to. ..............

Your name will then be added to the top post and every week your name will be in the quest until the end.

At the end, only for those that would like to, we each put out longest run of the quest and it is then marked on a virtual run we are doing from John O Groats to Lands End.

Then it all starts again for another six week Quest.

Well I was up early and on my computer at 8 am this morning. The reason for being so productive is the Hackney half marathon came online then. So 10 May next year I am all signed up to run a half marathon. I am still in a bit of shock that I have done it. Most people think I am mad, but then they thought I was mad to put in for a triathlon and I managed that. I am not competitive at all but the thing I have missed more than anything is the drive and exhilaration training for something gives me. I have tried to feel the same way just training and moving forward but it doesn't give me the same sort of buzz. As soon as I hit buy button that tingle came and I am just sat here buzzing because I have a new wacky challenge. By the way the reason for putting in for the 1/2 is because the new way of running is really suiting me and I think I can increase without injury in the 23 weeks that I have to train in.

Oh er RFC well done you. A HM!

I had a good week. Got 3 runs in - speed, stamina and a 6.5K. Also a gym session with weights and rowing machine.

Pilates booked for today and I got my bar code for parkrun. Going to go this Saturday. Gulp!

Good luck this week everyone.

Thank you. Sounds like you have a rounded training plan. I have to be a bit more disciplined with stretches now. Good luck with parkrun. Let us know how you get on.

Fantastic RFC; good luck with the Hackney HM. These new challenges are fantastic for helping us keep motivated. I look forward to hearing about your journey.

Myself, I'm going to join the hydration station this week: lots of things happening on the family illness/moving house front such that I think it would be difficult to maintain my usual routine. I'll try and get out when I can but I'm probably better off having a week off.

Realfoodieclub profile image

Thank you. They say it's really good for us to have a week off. I've done it a couple of times and feel so much better after it. Hope the weeks not too stressful for you.

Yes... sometimes it is absolutely the right thing to do to decide that doing 'nothing' is the positive option...and you're allowed to change that if you get the urge. But it can be terribly draining if you let a sense of 'obligation' hang over you when you have a lot of things on. Sure it can sometimes help, but fundamentally this is about being fit for life's challenges!

I hope all goes smoothly!

Thank you GoogleMe . I think you are right & why it's partly I felt so down the other week. I certainly enjoyed my lie in this morning: I'm normally up at 4:30 for my runs, and I was up at 5:30 today. Not much of a lie in but it certainly made a difference

Good idea, tanyag - you can't do everything at once, and there's no point adding more stress to the mix. The roads will still be out there waiting for you! Good luck with it all.

Well done on signing up for a HM. I'm a long way off doing anything like that!

I went out and did my three runs again this week, but am finding I'm getting a bit suck in a rut so have downloaded the stepping stones podcast and gave that a go this morning (in the rain!). It may have increased my pace ever so slightly but I think I will need to try it a few more times before I decide if that is really the case. I'm going to do the stepping stones podcast for all my runs this week and see how it goes. I also plan to cycle to my local parkrun on Saturday just to watch and work out logistics, like where I can park my bike, leave my bag, and how the parkrun itself works.

RealfoodieclubGraduate in reply tocatch

Now it's sinking in it feels a long way off for me. Hehe.

Good luck with your stepping stones. I have yet to try them I have done speed. I hope you get a good feel for the parkrun on Saturday.

in reply tocatch

Hi Catch, I'm hoping to suss out the Oxford parkrun tomorrow morning. Thanks for the idea!

My 150 minutes securely in the bag this week. This is thanks to a bit of planning ahead (so my next job after writing this is to make this week's plan). I did two runs, two swims and had a good long walk one day, plus usual odd bits and pieces. Plus I did my yoga sessions to balance it out, and they included quite big chunks of meditation/relaxation.

I've not lost any weight this week though but at least it is not now hovering back near that scary BMI line, and lots of fruit and veg and generally healthy and yummy things. I have treated myself to a new swimsuit (from Oxfam online) - my current one is looking a little baggy, sadly more due to age (its) than there being less of me to fill it.

Realfoodieclub profile image
RealfoodieclubGraduate in reply toGoogleMe

Well done on your 150 min. I agree with the planning. I always print a monthly plan for the fridge. That way it stares at me everytime I go into the kitchen and I hate not seeing things ticked off. I forgot about the weight. I have lost 3lb but I don't think it counts as somehow I managed to put on 4lb while in Spain. Oops. I think that was down to wine and pastries.

2 run week last week. I was planning an outing for Saturday morning, as the rest of the weekend was fully booked, but the weather was VILE and I just couldn't face it.

But last Tuesday was a public holiday here (Armistice, France) so I went out and ended up doing 7k, which I was very pleased with. And Thursday I did the Stepping Stones podcast for the first time and covered 4k, so overall I'm happy.

Currently sitting in my nice warm office watching the rain fall, but if I'm going to manage 3 runs this week I MUST get out today (my daughter arrives Thursday for a long weekend, first visit since she left for a gap year in September, so spending time with her is my priority for the weekend !) Plan is to go out early afternoon (I work mornings) and Wednesday and then try to fit in at least Speed at some point over the weekend !

Happy running everyone !

Hi Rfc and fellow Questers. Not a great week for me...several days on the trot of feeling decidedly below par, coupled with a return of the waist /hip strain I had in the summer...so have not run at all...deciding to fully rest it until I know it's safe to get out again...even a gentle walk with the dog was enough for me to feel it for hours after.

It's feeling a whole lot better today,so I am hoping I can pick up the running again this week.

Rfc,I am in awe....and not a little envious ....how amazing to have such a goal to work towards ( I know that's what I'm missing).

Your new way of tackling running must be suiting you by the sound of it.I think I maybe should consider run/walk ,especially this week as I try to ease back into it....only problem is I don't have any special watch...I just run with my Omron step counter,so I know the distance I've covered ,time of start and finish,calories/fat burned ,but that's all.

Sorry for going on a bit...still a bit woolly headed .

Happy running you lot :)

Realfoodieclub profile image
RealfoodieclubGraduate in reply toCarolecal

I am sorry your having trouble. It really get you down when you feel like that. You could do the run walk with a digital watch, just keep an eye on the mins. I don't think it has to be too exact. I think as time goes on it will become natural when to stop and start, but I definately do think it makes my joints less niggly. I have oestoarthritis so it hurts if I don't do anything but also if I do too much. So far this is protective. I hope you find a way that works for you.

Carolecal profile image
Carolecal in reply toRealfoodieclub

Thanks Rfc...I'm definitely going to try this method...or my own variation on it...there may have to be some guesswork involved as I don't even have a digital watch !

I know what you mean about hurting when you do nothing...we need to strike a happy medium at all times...I need to take on board that if I can't run there are other things I could be doing....well,usually anyway .

Hope you have a good week x

Crumbs RFC!! Well done for being brave enough to sign up for a HM. I'm looking forward to hearing about your preparations. Clocked up 7.5k over 2 runs last week- a 5 and a bit k and a 2 and a bit k. Happy to get a new 5k PB but not going after speed anymore, just pacing myself for the Leeds MoRun on Saturday :)

D'oh - big fat nothing fail for me last week.

Monday morning plan sorted. OH working away for 3 days, so run Tues and Thurs whilst on my own, friend's 30th birthday party Saturday then run Sun afternoon.

Tuesday afternoon call for last minute work in London. That's 2 runs gone. Too many nibbles, cider and pick 'n' mix at the party = too lazy Sunday!

Normal service resumed today, but lots of leftovers to eat/drink my way through!

Realfoodieclub profile image
RealfoodieclubGraduate in reply tofolkieboater

We all have weeks like that sometimes, sounds like you had some fun time with freinds that's important to. Hope this week goes well for you.

Hi all questors! I've had a mixed week. My technology is not cooperating and I've spent a fair bit of time trying to fix it - resulting in delayed starts to runs and feeling irritated and out of sorts when I finally give up and just run. I've almost (I hope) convinced myself to give it all up, but that's very hard for me. I love the feedback.

Anyway, I got out there three times. Monday run went really well; Wednesday I ralked along the canal in the rain and also in the wrong direction so that I had to wait (wet) to catch the train home. I won't be doing that again; Saturday a very frustrating run where I faffed around with failing technology and ended up running blind.

I LOVE this forum though, people are so supportive and helpful and really 'lift you' when you need it.

Well done RFC for signing up for the HM.

Catch- ditto! A bit of a rut sounds like me too. I've just downloaded the Stepping Stones podcast tonight and realised that it's probably more do-able for me than the other two. I can just about do the speed one, but the stamina is beyond me - way to fast. Looking forward to giving the Stepping Stones ago!

Useful to hear that folk have experienced that having a week off can help. Maybe I'm being too rigid with myself.

Good luck for this week all!

It's rotten when tech dosent behave. I am terrible I rely on mine too much. It does sound like you could use a fun run soon. I am still yet to try stepping stones, let us know how you get on.

I've downloaded the speed and stamina podcasts as well but have not attempted them yet. From what you say I may wait a bit and get the stepping stones sorted first!

A half marathon RfC? Fantastic! You obviously like to keep challenging yourself. I am doing the run walk run (Galloway method) for my longer run each week and got to 8k on Sunday, so pleased with that. Aiming to do a 10k on the 7th December - the first of two facebook c25k and beyond virtual 10k's.

I also did 2 non walking a runs - one was 30minute run and the other was with my jog scotland running group run where we ran 4 miles but I was really challenged because a good chunk of that time was spent running uphill. Mind you the jogscotland leader ran with me for the second half and kept me going the whole way. I would definitely have stopped and walked if I had been in my own.

Carolecal, there is a facebook page which was set up for folk who are using the run walk run method. Quite a few of the members are or have been in HU C25k but are also in the C25K facebook page.

According to those close to me I bite of more than I can chew. That is until i prove them wrong. They are learning not to say too much. The comment your too old for a triathlon will never be forgotten. Hehe. Sounds like you are doing really well and have a structured plan. I will have to look at the facebook page as well. Thanks. Happy running.

lizziebeth57 profile image
lizziebeth57Graduate in reply toRealfoodieclub

Yep, I think a comment like that would have motivated me too. Once I had written that I will only manage 2 runs this week I just thought No, I'm not having that, and went for a 30 minute wee run. So, I am back on track for 3 runs this week.

I don't really have a structured plan but in my head I kind of know what I am doing for the next month or two. After that who knows???

It's so good not to be injured or ill though isn't it? Just loving that.

Anniemurph profile image
AnniemurphGraduate

Well, I'm still poised above the injury couch, not quite sure if I belong on there or not :D My thigh is sore but I tried it out on a 2.5k run and it was okay, but sadly, my shoulder was really sore on the same run. I had never thought that a sore shoulder would affect how you run, but it does. However, I go for my MRI scan on my shoulder on Thursday so hopefully that will give a clue as to how to sort things out.

No progress on upper body toning but 2lbs off so halfway there on the weight goal. Hooray! Happy running to everyone :)

Realfoodieclub profile image
RealfoodieclubGraduate in reply toAnniemurph

I think we forget that running is a whole body experience. I have just started to use my arms when I runrather than shuffle and I am sore in new places. Good luck for Thursday I hope they get to the bottom of it. I am 3lb down but after 4lb up from 2 weeks in Spain. Ooops.

Hello folks. It's been a good couple of weeks questing. Twice now I have managed my goal of 7k. That being said I can tell this is at the edge of my fitness level. I have to push myself very hard to finish. I might try and inch it up a little more this week, but I won't be upset if I just consolidate these gains either. Happy questing folks.

Not a great week for me either :0/. Running group was cancelled last week because of the weather. I ran 4.77k last Wednesday and haven't run since. My hip was still niggly so I bought myself a foam roller. I have used it a couple of times since Friday and it has definitely loosened something up. Life is a bit crazy at the moment, so didn't get to running club this week. I am off on a short break tomorrow so no running for a few days. Hopefully I will get back into it the end of next week :0).

Not much happening for me either, had a really good run on Tuesday, then came down with a streaming cold about 6 hours later. I was surprised as normally I wouldn't have been able to do any exercise while brewing a cold...I'm asthmatic so I won't run until I feel better, but I will get out for a nice walk.

I introduced myself to a neighbour who I haven't spoken to before, I often see running shoes outside her front door (I'd be scared someone would pinch them, we all know how expensive they are) and she told me about a local ladies only running club that meets on the common near me, run by Sweaty Betty and FREE!!!!! She says it's really nice and she will come with me if I want, I'm certainly going to give it a go.

Funny old week here. One treadmill run which was just boring, but tried to catch up with 'The Missing' while doing it (treadmills are noisier than I thought). 5k outside which was 4k really because I forgot to lap the playing field loop on the way back and did the walk/run thing but came in at 1 min slower than my best time for running the same route. Will continue experimenting with it though because I like the idea of going off a bit quicker and am hoping I can maintain quicker for a bit longer after a week or so. Anyway, an experiment at the moment and it is lovely not to feel completely pooped all the way around.

Get you RFC! A HALF MARATHON!!!! Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay. If I can, you can. LOL You'll be fine if you follow the training plan

I'm on a 10 k training plan at the moment and am running 3 times a week. I ran 18 k last week. All going ok (fingers crossed)
