Second to last week of the quest. Time seems to fly by so quickly. I think life has speeded up literally since I learnt to run. I am always on the go but somehow seem to manage to fit it all in. There are the odd occasions when it seems impossible to fit my runs in but I always seem to make time. I think that is more to do with the fact I want to do them than my organisational skills.
What the quest is:-
The quest takes six weeks. You can join any time within that six weeks.
The main aim of the quest is to help you find a focus or goal that you would like to achieve by the end of the Quest period.
I ask that you will be a graduate or about to graduate to join the quest. The main reason I ask this is that while you are doing the program your plan is very structured so I wouldn't want the quest to interfere with that.
Most popular goals are:-
To run three times a week
To slowly increase distance
To train for a specific race
To add In Stretch and strength exercises
As you can see they are personal to yourself and it's totally your own choice.
Every week I will pin a new post where all the members of the quest can talk about how things are going.
So if you wanted to join all you have to do is put
I would like to join the quest, or count me in and then I would like to. ..............
Your name will then be added to the top post and every week your name will be in the quest until the end.
At the end, only for those that would like to, we each put out longest run of the quest and it is then marked on a virtual run we are doing from John O Groats to Lands End.
Then it all starts again for another six week Quest.

Last week has been a productive week. One speed, one 5km and on 9.17km. Also a 5km walk. I thought that if I am doing run/walk then my walking muscles need a bit of training too. I also managed a stretch and strength session. The difference a goal makes to me. I am definately a carrot sort of person. Happy running everyone.
I like a training plan too. I have one and am following it like a diligent student (well it had to happen one day)
I ran nearly 27 km s this week - running on my own and with a jog group. Enjoying running immensely at the moment. Walking everywhere as per and doing my exercise DVD about 5 times a week
My quest is working towards a 10 k race in early December
Everyone seems to be doing well. I enjoyed my week on the hydration station last week. The best part was getting an extra 90 minutes in bed during the week Still, I learnt something very personal: I have learnt to recognise when my body is hungry. Silly I know but given I am trying to lose weight, an important goal. I definitely ate a lot less, and the biggest factor was no running. Conversely, I went out for my first run in a week yesterday, and had regular hunger pangs afterwards, which were assuaged with small, regular meals. Good to know what real hunger feels like, rather than eating for the sake of it.
Back to running anyhoo. My goal for this week, including yesterday's session is to do 6 x 30 minute sessions this week, focussing on run/walk. I need to work out some kind of plan for the next few weeks that will allow me some flexibility: one challenge was out of the week with moving out of my house. Now I got to get completion done on my new one....
On the good news front I achieved my Charted Engineer qualification with the Institute of Mechanical Engineers last week
Congratulations Tanya on qualification . Also interesting about Eating more when running but still trying to lose weight . It's difficult isn't it trying to find the balance
Congratulations on the qualification with the I Mech E, Tanyag, that's a great achievement Also it looks like you've had a very successful week otherwise, well done!
I completed the stepping stones podcast three times last week and found it easier each time. It has dropped my pace down below 7 min/km so I am getting better. Came down with a cold this weekend though so did not get out running this morning as I decided to give myself an extra rest day and will move my running days along by one so will go out tomorrow instead. I may try downloading some bpm music and see how fast I can run my loop now!
I am still following my BUPA 10k training plan and running 3 times a week . I am struggling with the exercising at home to Jillian at the moment, due to lack of time and trying to fit everything in . Must get my 'arris into gear for this week
Thanks RFC for putting this up and Good Luck to all fellow movers and shakers xxx
Seem to have slipped into 3 x 4.5k runs per week. This is less than I was hoping for by now, but is certainly more than pre-c25k so I suppose I should be satisfied if not quite overjoyed.
I am managing the hills a little easier now.
This morning's run was a Personal Worst in a good way ... I stopped for a little chat with a lovely lady I meet who I know is quite isolated and only sees people while she is out walking her dog. Managed to score 15 mins standing still. Must get a grip. I said that last week ...
Thanks RWD, it was a surprise to find I was still breathing reasonably regularly at the top instead of the usual fish out of water gasping! Suppose things must be moving along in the right direction.
Main thing is Slookie we are all moving regardless of direction ! And your wee chat probably meant a lot to that lady you met So all in all really ' good' run
Well I think that shows true fitness, Slookie and the world is a better place for you being in it. I know that sometimes we are in pursuit of a particular goal in that session and do need to prioritise that but on the whole if we can't fit this sort of thing into our lives then we are not fit at all, however fast or long we run, however strong and flexible we are.
Aw, thanks GM. You are right about fitting it in - being in the best possible health really should be our number one priority so getting out and doing something is better than doing nothing, but there has to be a sensible fit with life and our fellow-hoomans.
Nah, she made mine. She is in her 80s and has wonderful stories about where I now live and who did what when. And ... because she walks such a lot it does make me focus on the benefits of staying on the move, however slowly, cos she is as sharp as a pin.
It was a good week running for me. We've had a few days of weather above 0 so much of the ice had melted, which makes for less stressful running. Managed to complete 8 k yesterday along the river - I feel a bit like I'm cheating because it's so flat compared to the area I usually run. But it has a better chance of long ice free stretches. I've realized my pace has to drop over the winter due to safety, and there will be no fartleking until paths are totally clear.
Not a bad week. Managed only 2 runs, a 7K and a 5K at my first Parkrun. Also managed one gym session with weights, etc and a Fitness Pilates session which was so tough. I ached for 3 days afterwards so it must have done some good!
Must get more runs in this week but life keeps getting in the way!
Good luck for this week fellow questers and watch that ice.
I got 3 runs in last week, a 3k and 2 x 5ks. Was going to be a 10k on Saturday as I was home alone, but dreaded knee started to play up again. If it does it tomorrow I'm off to buy a support bandage to try.
Can't believe we are in week 5 of quest Argh!! Well weight up and down as usual so don't see me getting loss I was hoping for. Running however going well Got new PB at park run on sat which was exactly year since did first park run so pleased with that. Was hoping to do more swimming but only managed 6 lengths this week but am finding it a bit easier so guess that's progress. Would like to say going to really focus on weight loss and strengthing next couple of weeks but don't see it happening due to family commitments so to take pressure of me am going to do what I can and not to get too stressed if I don't achieve what I had hoped to this quest. Good luck to everyone for next 2 weeks
Well, things do go up and down in life, don't you find? An anniversary PB at Parkrun is great, and even if you 'only' managed 6 lengths swimming, if it was easier then that is progress, hooray! I think it's a good idea to take the pressure off yourself and just do what you can. Good luck to you!
That's great F-4-60, a PB at Parkrun and a year of doing it! I haven't been swimming for so long I think 1 length would have me floundering about, so I am supa-impressed with 'only managed 6'!
Fitfor60 do what you can do and don't worry about what you can't. You've had some great achievements this week.
I'm feeling a bit "Aaarrgghhh" too about where we are in the Quest and my weight. I feel I have got a grip of it though even if I will not have lost the modest amount I planned.
As to my activity goal, I think I am down about 10 minutes on that. If I don't get some time in early in the week, it is less likely I'll hit my target so a lesson learned there. Essentially I think that was about not enough walks (the dog may add her agreement there) Endless car troubles are not helping although one of my runs started from the house (or rather the warm up walk did)
I had two runs and a swim and the swim was a big achievement as I managed a kilometre - 40 lengths - in 40 minutes. Two years ago I couldn't really swim the two lengths you are supposed to be able to in order to be allowed in the deep end.
What I missed (I think) was my longer yoga session, for no good reason other than lack of planning, the week just slipped by.
Thanks google me One of really good things about these quests are even if you don't do as well as you hoped you sort of get a fresh start every 6 weeks so thanks again Rfc
You must be so chuffed about swimming 40 mins - that's hard Let's see if we can get out of arghhh feeling next couple of weeks
Not quite on track with anything... but doing a bit of everything. Regularly running though not hitting the 5k as often as I'd like. Think I need a new route as get to 4-4.5k and am home and have been lazy about doing a lap around the block. Still a bit to go on the shred, though must say finding it easier than previous gos so the running clearly has had an impact. Only 1.75lb down so far, hoping for more recognition on the scales before the end of the Quest!!
Still suffering with my cold/cough, not run since last Wednesday. Really missing it, my weight creeps back up instead of down...still not well enough to get out there, think it will be another two or three days at least
Well, another mixed week. I went for my MRI scan on my shoulder, which was very painful (not the scan but the dye injection beforehand) and it has been sore since then. I've only managed one run this week but I have signed up for the Run Streak or whatever it's called - one mile a day from Thanksgiving until New Year's Day! Even I can do one mile a day
So no upper body toning at all.
In terms of weight, though, I am cautiously pleased - today the scales showed 11 stone 13lbs for the first time in years and years, which was quite a moment, and I have worked out that in terms of BMI if I lose two more pounds and get to 11 stone 11 lbs I will be overweight instead of obese. That will be a big achievement. I don't think I'll make that by the end of this Quest, as I am away with friends this weekend but I might make my original goal of one more pound to go.
Good luck with the weight loss goal. I can tell you from personal experience that going from obese to overweight is a great feeling, even though there is only one pound difference between the two! My next step is overweight to ideal weight range and I am looking forward to that feeling!
Thanks, catch - it was a big realisation so I just need to dig in and get there! Good luck with your weightloss - that will be a marvellous achievement!
Ongratulations in breaking into the next stone band It's such a boost physiologically As Laura used to say slow and steady and you'll get there So true for weight loss as well as running
No running for me again last week due to the dodgy hip....also managed to put my back out too ,though that cleared up after a few days ...so felt a bit low really.
Anyway...I am cautiously optimistic that a little trot out is on the cards for sometime in the next few days...with correct painkillers since Sunday things seem to have improved a lot,but I won't be going mad and over doing it
Hope your shoulder is improving.....and very well done on your weight loss....Fitfor60 is right on the nail with that slow and steady advice ..... hang on in there...set little targets ,give yourself little rewards
