I am currently following the rundouble 5-10k programme, doing this training once a week not three and currently on three x 18-minute runs with a minute's walk in between. Been fairly comfortable so far, up to about five miles run/walk. Do you all think it would be a really bad idea to enter a 10k event in the next few weeks? The Cambridge Town and Gown 10k is in about a month and I was wondering whether I might be ready for it. By that point I would be running for 2 x 27 minutes with 3 minutes' walk between.
Did anybody else run ha! before they could walk?

I often did 5K Parkruns as part of my C25K training.
I think that if you are capable of doing 2x27 minutes running and 3 minutes walking once - then you could do it again. HOWEVER --- without knowing your pace, I doubt that this would get you across 10 klms and therefore you would need to have something still inside you, after you finish the 2x27+3 , to complete the 10K. Even if you had to walk, or run/walk short intervals, I think that you could probably do it. BUT--- when we run our training runs, we tend to run slowly (or we should !) , Just beware of the temptation during an actual race to go too fast - especially at the beginning when everybody forges ahead. Run the race at your usual training pace (and especially so if you are currently only running once per week??)
It's another mile and a quarter on top of what you do now. If you can follow Bazza's advice and be disciplined enough to go at your own pace you'll probably be fine. You might find it helpful to aim to do a certain run-walk pattern for as long as it takes (although you will almost certainly want to run over the finish line).
What sort of race is it? If it's a "race" then it might be taken too seriously by others for you to feel comfortable walking. If it's a "fun run" then you'll be absolutely fine.
BTW do you do other runs during the week, or just one run a week? Would imagine it would be helpful to be doing 3 per week as training if you do decide to take part.
Do you live in Cambridge? I Googled races in Cam, didn't find this one....I'll be back in Cam late Oct, if I'm back in time I'll come and cheer you on!
I didnt have any problems finding it when I googled the name. They describe it as a Scenic 10k and say its good for fun runners, so he run/walk pattern should be fine. I agree that you might want to increase your runs per week if you really are doing just one.
Just to be clear: I'm only doing the 10k training once a week. I'm not running once a week. I run three times per week, but the other two runs are 20 minutes of intervals and 20 mins tempo run.
I see that there's a Town and Gown 10k in my old alma mater, Durham, in March. Mmm, biting northerly winds in one of the country's most beautiful cities
I think it would be brilliant to sign up for a 10k event! I signed up for a 5k the day after I started c25k, and for a 10k the day after my graduation run. Nothing like having a target to keep the focus
You will absolutely be ready for it. And you will have so much fun!
