Tri-ing to succeed Quest week 3 - Feel free to join

Hi and welcome to the third week of the Tri-ing to succeed quest.

The description of what the Quests are about are below.

It feels like the end of the summer is coming here In The UK. How are we doing elsewhere? I don't thing I am quite ready to get kitted up for cold running yet. I would like to take a bit of time running in the in between. I must admit though I got quite attached to my buffs last year and wore them long after I should of.

What the quest is:-

The quest takes six weeks. You can join any time within that six weeks.

The main aim of the quest is to help you find a focus or goal that you would like to achieve by the end of the Quest period.

I ask that you will be a graduate or about to graduate to join the quest. The main reason I ask this is that while you are doing the program your plan is very structured so I wouldn't want the quest to interfere with that.

Most popular goals are:-

To run three times a week

To slowly increase distance

To train for a specific race

To add In Stretch and strength exercises

As you can see they are personal to yourself and it's totally your own choice.

Every week I will pin a new post where all the members of the quest can talk about how things are going.

So if you wanted to join all you have to do is put

I would like to join the quest, or count me in and then I would like to. ..............

Your name will then be added to the top post and every week your name will be in the quest until the end.

At the end, only for those that would like to, we each put out longest run of the quest and it is then marked on a virtual run we are doing from John O Groats to Lands End.

Then it all starts again for another six week Quest.

As many of you might know, I have been up and down a bit the last couple of weeks. Today I am feeling more positive. I only did good training sessions last week. What I mean by that I purposefully went out to come back feeling confident, so i tailored everything back so I would not push myself into injury but enough to prove to my brain I could still do it. Yesterday I only did a 20min cycle and then jumped off and did a 1 1/2 min run. A Brick. This wasent much but it made me feel better. Today I will go for a proper run as I am feeling so much brighter.


Keep at it RFC - sounds like focusing on enjoying it and building confidence is the right way to go! Definitely don't underestimate any length of run after you've been out on the bike - my legs always feel like jelly!

I'm with you in trying to get out for a proper run today and then I'm debating a bit of open water swimming tonight - been twice so far and not enjoying it yet! Aim is just to do my distance without any moments of panic :)


Glad you feeling more positive . It's funny how some runs / cycles just feel better and sometimes for no reason . Good luck I. Rest of training

I'm managing to run 3 times a week and still training for a 5 k race next Monday (eek!)

Also, am cross training using exercise DVD's at home and it's paying off as I feel fitter and stronger, and fingers crossed ankles and knees behaving.

I should be walking but the dog is crocked!!!!! So, short walks for now til he's healed. Got another doggy to walk arriving on Thursday but he's not struck. I think he needs to do C25k as he's a couch potato dawg

Glad you are feeling better Rfc and wish you well for this weeks quest

I have been on target and posted yesterday about completing the 5k run for colour. Now the next bit was to keep going and try to get a bit further, also signed up for parkrun in Aberdeen which is a bit of a drive from me but hoping to do the first one on 30th as I have a "great nieces" ( ooh that makes me feel very old) 1st birthday party this coming Saturday. Now I have said it on here I better make sure that I actually do it!!



My goal this time is to run 1 hour 3 times a week. So far extending my runs but still having intervals of walking. I have managed an hour just need to build up to running the whole thing.

On a different note; I never took much notice when people mentioned the mental part of running. We all have great runs, good runs and bad ones, I have always called what I do jogging. However found myself being more able and more positive since the change in my vocabulary from jog to jog/run to run.

So I will be able to run for 1 hour 3 times a week by the end of the quest :) happy questing :D x


Funny old week . Hard hill work on wed and went out Thursday morning to do practise 10 k to prove to myself I would be able to do distance at race in 3 wks time (agh) anyway had to stop after 2 k as felt woozy Walked back to car had my toast and jam which usually I have straight after run and felt fine so thought I would continue and see what happened. Strangely seemed to get in zone and had cracking run all be it slowly . Couldn't do park run as had 3 little grandchildren for sleepover at weekend They went home Sunday after tea and I was pretty tired . All comfy in front of TV but kept thinking must do run to keep on track with training Went out and did 35 mins up and down grassy slope/hill and felt so much better after. So this week has taught me plans are great but it's ok to adapt to fit in with life. Happy running everyone


Funny week - busy.... pleased with getting some little runs in to nibble away at my overall distance goal but nothing else.

Enjoyed seeing all the runners in London on a two day (non-running) trip to the capital. Dismayed that the scales are telling me I am overweight again, despite all the walking we did. I know that will sort itself out without any particular effort on my part but it does show that I really do need to get my usual weight down several kilos. My calves and shins are feeling really tight which is interesting - I still did my usual yoga and I was wearing good active sandals but it does go to show that pavements and me do not go together, it's not running.


What a relief to see a kilo disappear overnight... weird thing isn't it? Especially as still in holiday mode here, plus celebrating precious firstborn's GCSEs.


I'm meeting my aims for the quest, maintaining the weekly 10k and slotting in pilates here and there - just as well as my core strength is weak. Last night at running group we had a competition on who could hold a plank the longest, front, then side, then backwards. I was dreading it and sure enough, tremble, tremble, first one out most times... hate to say it but it brought back memories of PE lesson humiliation. :-( Repeat to self, 'must do more planks'.


Backwards plank? I have tried plank, found it very hard, but never heard of backwards plank

Hmmm... well, I'm back from Singapore and glad I didn't bother taking my running kit because it was 29C - 32C with massive humidity, so I would never have coped. There were loads of people running, but I wouldn't have been one of them!

However, I came back on Saturday, it's now Tuesday and I haven't been out for a run once :( Don't quite know what's happened but it's never even crossed my mind and I'm really not missing it. I've only missed a week! So here's hoping I can get my fat self out the door again this week and get back on the road - believe me, I need to.

Hi Anniemurph ,I don't blame you for not running in those conditions...it would probably have put you off for life. I've found that holidays , as nice as they usually are,can be devils for messing up routine and knocking everything out of kilter...running, diet, whatever..I always find it really hard to get back to where I was before I left !

I recently went for 16 days with only one run...due to a combination of a week away ,then a virus ...only now after nearly a fortnight of forcing myself out of the door am I starting to feel like I'm beginning to find my running mojo again.

Yours will return I'm sure...just lace up your shoes and tell yourself you can come back after ten minutes if you have to. Chin up, good luck :)


Aww, thanks for the kind words, Carolecal, glad you've recovered from your virus and you've found your running mojo again - hope mine will come back too. I'm sure you're right and I just need to get my shoes on and get out of the door. I might just try and do that tomorrow morning! Thanks :)

Hi everyone ....managed to stick to my target last week and ran three times....did Speed podcast(3.5K covered) plus a 5.6K and a 7.2K. Hoping to get to 8 K for my longer run this week,would like to get back to being able to run 10 once a week,but don't want a recurrence of the hip problem which caused so many problems last month.Feel like I'm finally starting to plan and 'enjoy' my running again...it's been a while....it was feeling like a bit of a chore lately.

Just back from my hols, where I AMAZINGLY kept running 3 times a week. So a belated request to sign me up.

Holiday runs included:

* several runs on the moor where my brother in law lives (near Rothbury). Quite a change from my usual urban industrial setting. And involved running uphill which was a new experience/challenge for me. Surface was lovery to run on as it was a disused road that is now overgrown with grass, so nice and soft for the knees, though muddy in places.

* a lovely run on the beach between Seahouses and Bamburgh. If I lived anywhere near a beach I think that this would be my choice of place to run.

* a couple of runs round where I grew up (Dunfermline). Fun in a nostalgic sort of way. Also there were ripe brambles on the route for sustenance.

Will be heading out later for my first post holiday run. Pleasantly cool here today.

I graduated last week and my first goal was to run 5K without stopping, and I achieved that a couple of days ago. Very chuffed with myself, 46 minutes or so. My intention now is to take the pressure off a little, no goals as such, but just enjoy my running, maybe a few shorter faster runs and work on my speed a little bit
