Tri-ing to succeed Quest week 4 - Feel free to join.

Hi and welcome to the fourth week of the Tri-ing to succeed quest.

Here we are past the half way point. It's seems we are divided on holiday running. For those that have found it hard remember that the rest is actually very good for your body. I am reading more and more about the importance of rest periods.

I totally understand how hard they can be as well. I am on a tapering week and mentally finding it very difficult. My brain wants to train but I am only allowed to do three sessions this week. One each of the run, swim and bike and only for 15min.

By the time I sit down to write hello to week five my triathlon will be done. It's going to be a strange week I think.

The description of what the Quests are about are below.

What the quest is:-

The quest takes six weeks. You can join any time within that six weeks.

The main aim of the quest is to help you find a focus or goal that you would like to achieve by the end of the Quest period.

I ask that you will be a graduate or about to graduate to join the quest. The main reason I ask this is that while you are doing the program your plan is very structured so I wouldn't want the quest to interfere with that.

Most popular goals are:-

To run three times a week

To slowly increase distance

To train for a specific race

To add In Stretch and strength exercises

As you can see they are personal to yourself and it's totally your own choice.

Every week I will pin a new post where all the members of the quest can talk about how things are going.

So if you wanted to join all you have to do is put

I would like to join the quest, or count me in and then I would like to. ..............

Your name will then be added to the top post and every week your name will be in the quest until the end.

At the end, only for those that would like to, we each put out longest run of the quest and it is then marked on a virtual run we are doing from John O Groats to Lands End.

Then it all starts again for another six week Quest.

Hi Rfc

I hope this weeks training goes well for you and good luck with the triathlon. I am sticking with my goals but still on 5k - did my first parkrun on Saturday. Still hoping to get beyond the 5k at least once in this quest. Good luck to all

Never done a taper week yet RfC but can see it would be mentally difficult cos you will be just wanting to keep doing long runs etc. it must work doing less week before race but quite strange. I managed a 10 k practise run this week which I really enjoyed Went really really slow - not even out of breathe at end. But felt I could have kept going and was very relaxed . Decided I'm going to do more slow runs as totally different to ones where I am trying to go that bit faster . Can't believe less than 2 weeks to go to 10 k race. Good luck with your tri RFC and look forward to reading how you got on . Happy running everyone

Glad to read you are enjoying your long slow runs Fitfor60, Miles_Yonder posted a good link about why we should all do these:

runnersconnect.net/running-...

It's something I've only relatively recently started doing myself, nice to read that there are very good scientific sound reasons behind it. All best wishes for your 10k, when and where is it?

Thanks for link Notbad. I still find it hard to understand how easy runs help but now just accept that they do. 10 k is on Sept6th at Strathclyde country park which is near glasgow - about an hour away from me. It's womens running magazine race and apparently it's quite flat course. Good luck to you and lovefoodie for GNR - on same weekend ?

notbadGraduate in reply toFitfor60

Thanks, our lovefood is indeed running the GNR on the same weekend (the 7th), not me though (maybe next year ;-) ). I will be cheering her and others on as I'm volunteering as a cheerer for Alzheimer's Society this year - and have promised her there will be much shouting and banging of instruments, I'm so looking forward to it! I'll also be cheering you on too in spirit on the 6th, enjoy it, you've trained well for it. :-)

Home from my hols and managed 2 runs last week.

Monday and Tuesday were travel days, so no scope for running. Wednesday afternoon I headed out to the park and did a happy 4k. Felt good and pace was better than pre hol, so maybe the running uphill in Northumbria did me good.

Saturday I went out again, not really sure what my goal was. Felt really sluggish, and in the end settled for 5k in my slowest time since June ! Not entirely sure what it was by I just couldn't pick the pace up. But it was still a nice run along the river, with Saturday Live on the podcast.

Plan for this week is to fit in 3 runs. Maybe Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday as forecast says cool and rainy for Tuesday and Thursday afternoons...

happy running to all. Good luck with the triathlon RFC !

Hi :)

I haven't had a great week training :/ feel I am going backwards not forwards :/ however this is a new week.

Last week I managed 54 minutes twice and then only 30 minutes :( but I did manage a 8 mile bike ride on a rest from jogging day :)

As been said on here before: onwards always

Happy questing :)

Anniemurph profile image

You are so right - this is a new week! Sorry it hasn't been going so well but hopefully things will pick up this week and you will feel better about your running. Just a question - were you eating and drinking okay, were you coming down with some sort of horrible bug that your training didn't feel right? Anyway, I'm sure it will be better this week - like you say, onwards always and happy questing :)

Best of luck to you RfC. I think rest can be beneficial - as much from a mental and emotional point of view as the physical. In my case it helped me achieve 10k on Sunday.

I had a bit of a stressful week, what with work and home commitments. As such, I only had done two of my planned four runs. I thought to myself that I had to get out yesterday, at least for a walk, and it wasn't planned as a run. My phone was at home, and I had a 10km route worked out with options to turn off at 3km, 5km and 7km depending on how I felt. The first km was a walk, but as my mind cleared from being out in the fresh air, I broke into a light jog, and made it round the route in 1hr 40 minutes. By no means a world record for a 10k, but given my very slow jog and my mood, pretty good going I thought. It was completely unstructured, and there where a few points where I slowed to a walk for a minute or two. To me, it just went to show what can happen when you don't put any pressure on yourself to achieve a set target - and in fact, by the end of it, I was thinking about another 2k loop on to the end of it to take it up to 12k :-)

Anniemurph profile image
AnniemurphGraduate in reply totanyag_163

That's a great example of how no pressure and lots of options turned into a great achievement - well done! Thanks for posting because it reminded me not to stress about 'must achieve x or I've failed' :)

tanyag_163 profile image
tanyag_163Graduate in reply toAnniemurph

Thank you AnnieMurph. I agree it is very easy to fall into the trap of pushing ourselves. I have been following a b210k programme, but now think I'll just take a few weeks to do some unstructured runs, no goals, distances, times to meet, as mentally, it was just so relaxing.

PS

Good luck RFC, I hope the experience is everything you hope it will be! Things to remember:

You have trained well for this

You can do it

Your best is good enough

Breathe

And most all enjoy :)

Good luck x

Thank you RFC. Good luck with your training regime. Like you I am running 3 days a week and not planning on any more

I have finished my race training for 5k but am moving straight into training for a half marathon. Whether I will do said HM I don't know but I am going to train for it, to keep me motivated.

I did my race in the pouring rain this morning. Got a PB and won a tenner for the fastest old biddy. Got a medal too

Keep up the training folks! Quests make for better motivation. Onward, always to quote MY!

Good luck with the triathlon RFC.

No running, no swimming, no cycling, no S&F, no weight loss, and even 2 days when I didn't do yoga first thing (unheard of) Not a good idea to do downward facing dog when you think you might be about to puke though.

We were having our 'holiday at home' so it is interesting to note that when we went away on holiday last year I managed two runs and the year before that we went away and I managed one (in the rain and had a really bad cough during the nights disturbing everyone's sleep so thought it wouldn't be politic to do more) Also celebrating precious firstborn in whom we are well pleased's GCSE results (with a caramel cream doughnut, family currency of congratulation or commiseration). And the shed the bike is in has a big pile of stone in front of the door at the moment.

Have done quite a lot of walking though (look at my picture, that's one walk we did - home to High Tor, cable car, walk down the picture and up the other side home) Went to Thor's Cave overlooking the Manifold Trail where I dented my quadriceps last year - still dented and did some unhelpful spasms whilst I tried to scramble into the cave. Ticked off lots of things I'd wanted to do for a while.

So I've left myself quite a bit of work to do with the Quest!

Managed 3 runs this week with a 5k which turned out to be a PB by the amazing huge time of 5 seconds! So I am fairly pleased with that. No run today - Bank Holiday -due to cold, rain and being dragged out to the shops by youngest daughter, which was infinitely more tiring than doing 5K :-D

Good luck this week Rfc...can't wait to hear how it goes for you.Being on your tapering week must feel quite frustrating, but I'm sure you'll reap the benefits of a resting week and all the diligent training you have put in.....fingers x'd for you on triathlon day .

Ran three times last week, twice to the Speed podcasts and covered 3.4 and 3.5K,plus a nice 8.3K to round the week off.

Hoping to get a 10K run done this weekend to celebrate my one year since graduation ....where did that year go ?

Happy running all :)

Amazed that I actually got 2 x 5k's in last week, one of which, at 28:13, was a whole minute better that my previous PB. Not only that, I got a wolfwhistle, admittedly a sarky one, from a couple of men on the towpath!!

Good luck to rfc with the triathlon and to everyone else with theirs goals, this week and beyond.

Dear RFc - congratulations on reaching your taper week - this Has got to be your mantra for the next four days and for your last few short training sessions until you arrive at your triathlon:) (thanks Asics)!

'Rest is as much a part of your training as running. It allows your body to recuperate and become stronger for your next run. Rest increases the training effect of active training sessions'.

Thanks for our quest I am getting fitter! And am swimming weekly trying to follow the speedo 12 week plan ( lucky to have a local pool that stays open until 10pm)! Ran a 10k a few weeks ago as my first long slow run and have booked in for another 10k mid October - using an Asics plan.

Marshalled at a parkrun last Saturday and running my first one this Saturday. Also 2 days into a 30day shred DVD with poppypug" :)

Have an amazing Tri race x

Well done RFC - sounds like all going well! I can't quite believe I will have done my super sprint triathlon in a few weeks either - had a practice run on Sunday morning and managed a 600m swim, 12k bike and 3k run which is more than the distances I will actually have to do. Did not enjoy it one bit though and had a girly strop/meltdown on the bike ride as hadn't quite realised how horrible it would be to ride a bike in a wet trisuit and I got so cold! Still, great feeling once it was all done and I crept back into bed to warm up!

Fitfor60 profile image
Fitfor60Graduate in reply toADR2009

Goodness ADR - super SPRINT triathlon!! Is that just like triathlon but really fast ? Do you know I have never understood why the swim is not last as to me that would make far more sense!!! Don't think we were built to cycle in wet cossie

ADR2009 profile image
ADR2009Graduate in reply toFitfor60

Thankfully it just means a much smaller triathlon so not as far to go! Definitely won't be going fast! Completely agree about the swim - any exercise in a wet cossie is just not nice - although at least this way I can squeeze myself into the wetsuit before the whole thing starts (which is an event in itself as far as I am concerned!!) :)

All best wishes to rfc and ADR2009 for your triathlons - I am in awe (although too cowardly to be tempted ;-) ).

Reasonable week last week with 3x runs, no 10k though as supposed to be doing a 10k event tonight, if my running buddy gets back to me that is. Good parkrun this week, a guy thanked me as he used me as pacer for the 2nd lap (I had no idea but it made my day), a friend got another PB and is edging her way to sub 30 which was brilliant to watch. Happy days. :-)

What a buzz that someone used you as pacer Notbad Good luck with 10 k tonight

Good luck with the triathlon, Rfc - hope it goes well.

I've only done two runs this week and one of them was thanks to Carolecal who kindly encouraged me to get myself out of the door - and I did :) But one was getting on a bus in all my Lycra-d glory and running back down the Tissington Trail home. It was only 2 miles but it felt like a great achievement. The next step is getting on the other bus because that's a 5k run home. Not yet, perhaps, but soon!

Good luck and happy running to everyone who can, and swift healing to those on the injury couch.

ADR2009 profile image
ADR2009Graduate in reply toAnniemurph

Very jealous of running the tissington trail! Have cycled it before and we're hoping to visit again this year :)

Keep going with the running - you'll be on that other bus before you know it!

Anniemurph profile image

Thanks - I'm very lucky to live at one of the stops on the Trail now, so it's easy running :) Hope you get back for a visit!

Thank you all for you well wishes. My Dad is arriving tomorrow and everything is ready and set to go on Sunday. I have a pool start time of 12.40. I have seen posts on twitter of people who have the same start time as me but they are hoping to finish by 2pm, mine is probably going to be more like 3.15pm but I am not letting that get to me. The main thing is to finish, I've never really been a competitive sort of person, I am doing this to show myself what I can do, I am not bothered if I am the slowest,(and probably will be). I promise that I will get back to being more active on here after the race and when Dad goes back home. Just wanted to say whatever the outcome thank you so much for all the support . Rfcx
