Really want to carry on but do not want permanent damage, suggestions please.

Now on week 6 but after my first 20 minute run (yeahhhh) I am now suffering from a painful left. Hip , rest, medicate or give up?

I am only on week 6 myself and I am not medically qualified in any way, but if you haven't had the pain before I would rest it for a couple of days then see a doctor if there is no improvement

You have to decide for yourself.
It could just be because you're not used to the exercise levels. You could wait a couple of days and see it goes away if it's not gone after a week you should get help.
Think the current issue of runners world has an article on it where that's more or less what they recommend.

Thanks for that, bursitis apparently! So a few days rest, some Brufen, paracetamol and I should be good to go again!
