I used to get stitch, I slowed down took deep breaths pushing the tummy out at the same time worked. I also drank more water about 30 minutes before my run.

try hydrating. Plenty of water the day before the run and a glass of water 30 min before running. At least it works for me

Advice given to me by a doctor is to breath in and out as though you are blowing up a balloon - this seems to be work - even if you feel slightly self conscious :-)

Hydration and food before running are one key...a banana or similar an hour or so, plus water.

I have never heard of the breathing exercises, but I know that breathing is one thing that many have difficulty mastering. Try different techniques (even if you may look daft) until you find one you are comfortable with.

Good luck and keep us posted

Laura explains the breathing technique in the podcasts, not sure which week perhaps around week 4 or 5.

This was from a previous post on the forum:

• Stitch is caused by a diaphragm going into spasm so take control of your breathing to help avoid it. It mostly occurs on the right side because that’s where your liver is and it will be bouncing against the diaphragm causing strain. Although you don’t want to run soon after a meal, try to have something to drink some time before starting your run since that will also help prevent stitch.

Practise “belly breathing” during your walking parts and on your day-to-day walks so your body gets used to it. You will increase lung capacity, strengthen chest muscles and abs, help to avoid stitch and improve stamina.
