Recently my mobile packed up and I had the option of buying a smartphone with GPS to track my runs, OR, I could (and should) have gone for a cheap mobile plus a dedicated Garmin or similar. Wish I'd gone for the latter!

I'd check to see if the 220 is available yet, might push the prices down a bit.

I love my Garmin, does everything you mention and more. So easy to check pace, time, distance en route and then upload your runs so you can follow your progress X

I've just bought a garmin forerunner 10 and have been using alongside a running app on my android phone. I have to say the Garmin is so much easier and does everything you need. I love it!

I no longer need to use the phone - yippee!!!

Careful using a device like this to measure calories... I wouldn't use it as a carte blanche to go and eat a huge slab of cake afterwards. Everyone's metablolism is different and is only very slightly influenced by weight and height and age etc. Everyone has many many factors which influence the rate at which their bodies burn calories and it just isn't feasible to have a simple mathematical equation which churns out an arbitrary figure which fits everyone in the population. According to my Nike+ app, I burn about 700 calories during a 5k run. Which has got to be impossible. If that was the case, I would be losing a hell of a lot more weight every week!

My personal preference would be for the FR110 over the FR10, as the FR10 only allows 2 pieces of info to be displayed on the screen at a time. I like to have time, distance, and average pace displayed. The FR110 allows you to see all this info at once, without having to press buttons whilst running. I trialled my wife's FR10 and pressed the wrong button trying to find my pace, which ended up stopping the run. It's only an extra £10-20 depending on where you buy it so it's worth considering if this is important to you.

I'll second what Narmour said, calories worked out by these devices are often wildly wrong. As an example, my wife & I ran a 10k together 6 weeks ago. I used my Garmin 110, she used RunKeeper on her phone. Same distance etc. My garmin told me I burnt 980, Runkeeper said she'd burnt 740. I then imported my run from my Garmin watch into strava.com (a similar service) and using the same data, their calculation told me I'd burnt 1150 calories.

To be honest , the calorie counter is the thing that I would use least (or at least I wouldn't take it too seriously , but thank you for the info and advice :-)

For calorie count your device really needs a heart rate monitor and you need to keep your weight updated on your device as this plays a big role in how many calories you burn...also you need to do a max heart rate test done to see what you limit is..all this goes towards how your device gives a calorie count..if you have the money and love your stats go for a Suunto Ambit..your looking at around £300-£400....a lot of money yes..but I was lucky enough to have a beautiful wife who bought me one for my Birthday/xmas pressy...love it as it last for longer battery wise than most other watches..I'm sure it's something like 17 hours or something on those line..well along time anyway.lol..as I've now progressed to ultra running thanks to the c25k and do 4hour plus runs at the weekend...the Garmin products are excellent too and was only the battery life that put me off..Garmins online site is alot better than Suuntos which gives more run related data as the Suunto products are aimed at other activities not just running...like trecking mountain climbing and well a wide range of activities......Happy mile logging

hey thank you for that, sadly my budget doesn't run to that but it's good to have peoples advice and opinions on different gadgets :-)

I have the forerunner 10 it's cheaper then the other versions I think mine was around £80 and it does, time and distance on display whilst running and when you have finished run it will tell you your time per k and and calories burnt etc. I love mine I'm sure the fancier versions are fab but for what I want it does the job just fine :)

Hey emmrocky that sounds even better, my running is on a bit of a 'downer' at the moment and I'm struggling a bit, maybe this would motivate me a bit . thanks for the info
