Do all you Garmin users get invitations to follow ultra-runners you never heard of?

I get them and I know it's rude, but I ignore them!

I agree with you!

I've had 3 invites from the same guy in Argentina and ignored them all. I only accept if I know they are C25K runners

The latest guy is from the USA -- obviously haven't accept ed him, but his profile is hilarious. As well as ultra-running, ultra-swimming and pretty much ultra-everything-else he appears to have a thing about bathing in ice cold tubs :-)

To be honest I love my Garmin for distance/time but never upload my stats. Is it worth doing?

Of course! That's half the fun!

Hmm, I don't. Not pretty enough, obviously.... ;)

Hahahahahah!

Did you see the piece in the Grauniad about the guy who hadn't run since his teens and, aged 30, went out and ran 30 miles straight off? Can run for 3 days and nights apparently without any muscle fatigue. Astonishing! theguardian.com/lifeandstyl...

I did indeed! And did you also see the article in Grauniad about "late starters"?

theguardian.com/lifeandstyl...

The first response in the thread which follows is mine!

I downloaded their advanced runner podcasts and started Yesterday -- see my post if, of course, you can find it! ((delia))

Yes, I did (but was somewhat put off by the disconnect between the photo at the top and the strapline "Lots of people start running in their 30s or older").

You were quick to respond! I even got as far as your second post, but generally I try not to read the CIF stuff as they always become so polarised and vituperative. It must be depressing being a journalist and seeing the nonsensical vitriol that some people like to pour over anyone who doesn't agree with them or their limited experiences.

Where are their advanced running podcasts?

What annoys me are that so many people are so negative about runners. I posted again lower down about this. Without giving you tmi -- I have a coil that holds my tibia to my leg bone having lost my rotula in a car crash in 1993. I have no miniscuses and my crossed ligaments are no more. Yet I run. Slowly. But I run and enjoy it. I have been told that I shall end up in a wheelchair when I'm 70. To be honest, I doubt that very much indeed :-)

Here are the podcasts -- theguardian.com/lifeandstyl...

As you've read by now, I didn't fare to well with the muzak, but then I think I have a pretty good excuse! xox d

Yeah, and the negativity is usually based on vague generalisations (running is impact therefore it's OBVIOUS it must be bad for your knees/hips/joints/body...).

I'm a strong believer in the 'use it or lose it' approach, so don't have much time for the entrenched negativity of the couchbound or the professionally cautious. Since I started running my lower back pain has improved and the cartilage problems that I used to have in my knees have disappeared. If it works for you with those leg rearrangements then that's what matters - and I suspect that those of us for whom it works will never connect with those who will never try it.

Thanks for the link.

High five, I couldn't agree more with you. Plus, imagine a life in which you only ate and drank and generally just did, what was supposedly good for you ;-) YAWN!

Use it or, indeed, lose it :-)

I've only had one - from a guy in Brazil - and I ignored him.

There's a new guy around who swims triple figures every day and writes about his dips in ice cold tubs afterwards!

in reply toswanscot

I think I've had a request from him as well. I too ignored.

Just the Guy from Brazil like Swanscot
