Running back from the brink....

After a little health scare in January with my attempt to set a new world record high blood pressure, I was sent for blood tests and an ECG to find the cause and put on beta blockers to fix the BP. Thankfully my ticker was ok and it was attributed mainly to stress and shoddy lifestyle (drinking too much). This became all too apparent from the blood tests. My Doctor decided enough was enough, it was time for a few lifestyle changes and who am I to argue. So I cut my alcohol intake to zero (give or take a pint or two) and decided to do the couch to 5k.

Unfortunately, cutting out the booze angered and old friend of mine... GOUT, which was an unexpected side effect. I have have a few bad attacks over the past three years or so but this put me on crutches for nearly a week, and in general 'walking wounded' mode for over a month.

Anyhow I stuck to my guns and finally the gout passed and I managed to embark on the C25K, and have just successfully completed week two!

It is the most aerobic exercise I have done in about ten years and remarkably I have not found it too difficult as yet! My weight is starting to drop and in general I feel really well.

So bring on week three! :)

Well done with the changes you've made already and the way you stuck at it through the tough times.

C25K in the later stages can be a mental battle but it sounds like you're more than up to the challenge :-)

Here's to the new you! Let us know how you are doing

Thanks for the support everyone, :)

I have been running purely on the treadmill at home up till this point, but once I can run for a bit longer I will venture out into the real world ( have a feeling the treadmill cannot measure distance properly). :)

Cheers,

Kev.
