4. LPM???

Last week I was delivered an oxygen generator and advised by the respiratory nurse to set it at 4 litres per minute which I have done, and although noticing some difference in my breathlessness it does seem very minor.

Is the setting of 4lpm pretty average or high or low, I have no idea.

Perhaps someone out there has some experience of oxygen generators.

Stay well everybody and be extra careful

Mine was set at 2,but if 4 doesn't seem to do anything for you, call your doctor.

Your doctor is who prescribes the LPM setting based on the tests you took. So the nurse is hopefully following his prescription. You can contact the doctor office and double check that setting is correct.

It seems high for someone who is just starting oxygen. Most of us start with 2% over night while we sleep. Then as the months or years go by we start using oxygen more and more besides just sleeping - with activity, etc. All of this at 2%.

At any time we also may find that going to 3% helps with activity. Just depends on the person.

Oxygen concentrators go up to 10% and then there are some devices that will also bump that a small percentage.

Too much is not going to hurt you. Although you are not feeling it yet or may never feel much difference but your organs do feel the difference. You heart, lungs, brain and more can die off and entropy from lack of oxygen.

Thanks jacob,I would just add that I only require oxygen when I am moving around just doing normal everyday tasks, when I am sitting down resting my stats are 95 but as soon as I start moving they will rapidly drop below 80.

I do not require oxygen at night and my nurse tells me I should try not to use it for more than 3 hours per day.

I still find that the oxygen is helping my breathlessness but only a little.

But mustn’t grumble.

Thanks

Max

I find that advice to only use your oxygen 3 hours a day very odd and senseless. So if you get up to take a walk and get breathless then you can not use it if you already used it for 3 hours that day??????

So then you pass out and have a heart attack or something due to lack of oxygen? Sorry but I am really upset over someone in the medical field advising to only use oxygen 3 hours a day.

Please see or talk to your doctor. Oxygen is not limited to how many hours a day. You use it when you need it. You risk organ damage when your stats go below 88%

Hello Maxiem, Please have a conversation with your physician about the oxygen that you need. Monitoring with a pulse oximeter will help make sure that you are not getting too much or too little.

Oxygen therapy doesn't ease breathlessness, it protects your organs from oxygen deprivation.

Mine was originally set at 4, but now is up to 6. However, my portable is set on 4. I guess your doctor would be better able to explain the difference. Good luck.
