Hi, dbowsley, What kind of doctor did you see? Since you feel uncertain about your diagnosis then you should ask for a more thorough examination or explanation.

Not sure what you're saying. What did she say. Are you going to a regular MD? I ask because asthma and COPD are not treated the same. Symptoms are the same and mistakes are made. Asthma is considered a separate disease.

You need a pulmonologist.

Had already been diagnosed with copd/asthma overlap with previous drs surgery.was a bit shaken on having yearly check that nurse said she'd never heard of it.Am on budeside,ACLIDINIUM BROMIDE and ventolin. My peak flow was down. Was told was ok because am on right meds.Just felt was a bit rushed.Asked about emergency meds and was told no because people tend to abuse them. 2 weeks later back at docs servere breathing difficulties given prednisolone and antibiotics!

Well my Doctors trust me with self medicating. I have a "as needed" supply of prednisone and an antibiotic. Just this morning i started an antibiotic.

The 2 are not treated the same, I would suggest at the very least getting a second opinion. After being told I have emphysema (a form of COPD) I had a pulmonologist tell me that I didn't have emphysema, he said "maybe adult onset nigh time asthma" ????? Needless to say I told my PCP what the pulmonologist had told me, so he showed me my CT scan, and the lung tissue damage that had been caused by the emphysema that I do indeed have. :(

Please get a second, or if needed even a third.

Yes ask to be referred to a pulmonary physician and get a full explanation. There are many people with COPD/ Asthma overlap. I have emphysema andI think I have an element of asthma as well. So I need 2 different inhalers plus the recovery salbutamol as required.

Hi

I have copd/asthma overlap and have had for a few years. I have to take meds for them both so I would definitely get a second opinion. I don’t know what kind of doctor you saw but to say she had never heard of that is like the A &E doctors saying you don’t have Asthma because you don’t wheeze. Hope you feel better soon.

Regards

Eian

The magic word it Pulmonologist. Many, especially old GPs haven't opened a medical book in years maybe since Med School. Things change and they don't keep up.

I am guessing that you were trying to say you have ACOS (Asthma Copd Overlap Syndrome). As others have said, COPD and Asthma indeed ARE separate diseases, but some people do have ACOS. That being said, I am not sure what "type" of doctor you saw, but possibly a general practitioner may not be familiar with that. I would suggest you see a pulmonologist who is trained and more well-versed in diagnosis and treatment of both diseases. Keep us posted!!

No problem! It took me a bit to get used to seeing the doctor's office called the "surgery". Such a different connotation here in the US!

One concern I would have is this: you wrote in one of your responses that "peak flow was down but told this was OK because of being on the right meds". Anytime your numbers are low I would be asking for an explanation. There are times that when your peak flow and/or FEV1 are lower it could be a warning sign for an impending exacerbation. This is the time that many of the best physicians begin treating with antibiotics and increased (or beginning) a round of steroids to prevent a possible hospitalization. My opinion- maybe a new doctor? It is important that when you communicate that symptoms are a bit worse that they take you seriously and not just say "it's OK because you have the right medication"...
