Stoma hasn’t worked for over 12 hours no pain

Hi, just wondering if anybody has had a stoma that hasn’t worked for more than 12 hours, no stomach pain or vomiting? My ileostomy has been very quiet and I’ve been drinking and eating normally,

Thanks 😊

That seems like a long time, but I wouldn’t worry too much if there’s no pain or vomiting. You might try some hot tea if you’re concerned; that might get things moving.

Hi...I've done massage, hot water bottle and now drinking coca cola.. I've been drinking warm water and cranberry juice.. still nothing is coming out..no noises either. Hoping the bubbles will push the problem thro

Avoiding all carbonation has helped me a gr8 deal. Gassy foods can cause slowing of stool transit. Would add an ostomy belt and add Credet massage to stimulate movement. Prunes!? Also tai chi can be of help to move the juices.

Be aware of temp, blood pressure and pulse. Usually no pain, no emergency. Feel better.

I was going to suggest Coke; but a lot of people, like Guy, say that causes gas and makes thing worse. It works for me, though. I hope it does the trick.

The only other thing I can think of is a really hot shower, letting the hot water hit your back.

If you start having any pain, nausea, etc., head to the hospital. Keep us posted.

After sometime and X-ray told constipated behind stoma... told drink movicol and if stoma still not pooping 72 hours ring stoma clinic to go in again. Feeling pretty crap atm... I thought it was impossible to have constipation with an ileostomy, apparently it’s been known...

I also thought you couldn’t get constipated with an ileostomy, so I’m surprised. I do take Miralax, which I believe is the same thing as Movicol, daily to prevent blockages as my surgeon recommended. I hope you get some relief soon. I’d be on the phone with the stoma clinic first thing Monday morning if not, and back at the hospital if things get worse before then.

Hi, gp said continue movicol 3 x a day... waiting on stoma clinic to ring as hardly any movement and like squeezing setting concrete out the bag,,! ☹️ just super nauseous and 💤.... drank 3 large glasses Coca Cola just burped a lot 😝.. going to try dispersable vit c tablets next as a regular instead of laxatives... I’m shocked i was told the constipation word ...

Hi Ann thank you , nothings worked as yet, just been speaking to stoma nurse who managed to speak to my surgeon who said for me to use metaclopramide... however I’m using Neupro patches which I believe is a no-no mix of meds.

So GP has said that’s fine and he will send script to the pharmacy... no mention of the mix of the 2 drugs, unsure who I should speak too now about the wording on the Neupro patch instructions regarding this ?

I’d ask the pharmacist.

Good morning, I’ve had six episodes of pain 5 lasting up to twelve hours of what I can only describe as full on contractions, the last ATTACK !!! the pain never subsided, my husband took me to A&E and I spent 9 days in hospital at first they thought it was very bad backed up poop, but as nothing they gave me shifted it and I was getting weaker by the day as only was given saline intravenously they gave me a CT scan only to finally find an obstruction due to scar tissue , thankfully no operation needed. But will this happen again ? has anyone else experienced this HELP!!!!

Hi , that's awful for you. I cannot imagine the pain and distress you must've been through. I have scarring adhesions behind one of the incisions that tugs each time I sit forward. However my problems was and is constipation... unbelievably I thought it was impossible to have this with an ileostomy. After spending years fighting the problem and having my large bowels removed, I was so shocked to be told its possible to have it in the small bowel. I'm now drinking movicol every day, plus fruit juice and drinking vit C tabs to keep the flow moving.

I think if you put your question in the main part of the forum you will have a better response than under this question i put on a while ago...

Good luck and best wishes to you 💞

Hi Dogbot here had a Stoma fitted 12th my first sorry ( fart) was on the evening 17th you will know when it happens because the wife and I had a little cheer and a kiss. But all Stomas do it differently so no really strict rules can take hours can take a few days or like me nearly a week, just keep to what the Drs say and wait for the FART 🤣.

Good luck
