So I still haven't been able to get a colonoscopy after nearly 2 years since I first began experiencing rectal bleeding and several other symptoms I've been dealing with on and off since then. Anyway, I recently found out that I have some uterine fibroids that might make it quite difficult for a colonoscopy to be performed on me. I do have the option to get the fibroids surgically removed, but don't really want to get surgery unless it is absolutely necessary, which according to the OB/GYN I am currently seeing, is not. Do you think I should schedule a date for a colonoscopy to potentially be performed on me and if it can't, to follow the advice of the GI doctor after that, depending what he finds? Or do you think I should look to get the uterine fibroids removed first? Thanks for any advice you can provide me.

Could really use some advice about what I should do
Dear WthrMtsfan712 ,
I'm so sorry to hear that you are still dealing with this and not being able to get the colonoscopy.
Because you'll be dealing with multiple doctors, it is really important to make sure that they are in contact with each other, and consulting on your case. It is also important for you to be a part of that loop and find out what they are coming up with in terms of options for diagnostic procedures as well as any treatment/surgery.
We do have several members who have commented and shared in the past the cross-over of GI issues with GYN issues, including fibroids, endometriosis, etc.
Seeking out second opinions can be really important when there isn't a clear path for the next steps. Also, speaking to a medical team that has experience in people who have medical issues across specialties can be particularly helpful.
In regards to your specific questions about surgery and colonoscopy, we're not able to give medical advice, and we are not medical professionals. I would recommend researching, but also engaging your medical team to determine the next steps.
For instance, if a colonoscopy is not possible due to the fibroids, would a CT Colonography (Virtual Colonoscopy) be possible?
Or, has the GI doctor been able to perform a flexible sigmoidoscopy, which is often done in a doctor's office? This is a minimally invasive procedure that allows the doctor to look at your lower colon, roughly about the last feet of your colon. While this procedure does not allow the doctor to see your entire colon, if a colonoscopy is not an option, they are able to see the lower portion and see if there are internal hemorrhoids or other inflammation in this portion of the colon.
I would recommend asking the GI about the CT Colonography, this is also minimally invasive, although you do need to take prep just as you would with a colonoscopy. Additionally, they do insert air into the colon via the rectum to be able to have a good view for the imaging, but many people have said this is just a slight amount of pressure and not too uncomfortable.
At this point, you've been waiting for so long, and in limbo, that it may be time to seek out a new medical team to be providing your care. Or minimally, having that conversation with your doctors that you are really reaching the end of your rope as far as how long you've waited and that you need to have a medical team that is partnering with you to find solutions, and not just providing reasons why tests can't be performed. What tests CAN be performed?
Please keep us updated and please ask your medical team for resources in regards to specialists that work closely with each other - in your case, it sounds like GYN and GI teams.
