I am 43 years old, 61kg or 131 lbs (5ft,9 or 174cm) and an avid road cyclist. Last year I had one massive blood loss via the rectum and no more. My performance went way down and at times I was going like an 80yr old. After doing the LEJOG and much peer pressure I finally went to see the GP. They carried out a simple blood test and identified the chronic lack of iron straight away. They arranged further test from that. The first tests came through almost straight away and were all clear. Mistakenly I upped the iron intake in my mostly vegetarian diet (flexatarian). Then I started to suffer the more frequent dehabilitating sore stomachs (about every 4 weeks then 3, then 2). I was getting worried and the last test a colonoscopy came through which found it. I was in hospital and it was removed within a fortnight. But what they did find was aggressive so I am in chemo (5th cycle). Despite that I'm cycling the best I've done in years and touch wood other than the sore pins and needles in the left hand, the side effects after this 5th cycle are non existent. I would urge anyone to go for that simple blood test, I should have earlier. I'd also urge anybody not to lie down to the chemo and fall into the 'vicious circle' (more rest, more pain, more rest, more pain etc)
