On behalf of my grandmother in which she is in her early 60’s and was diagnosed with rectal cancer a little over a year ago. She was treated with a chemo pill and radiation. Later her cancer was surgically removed and was released with a colostomy bag. The bowel bag was later reversed once her bowel obstruction was given time to heal. She later developed sepsis infection due to a bowel leakage. She recovered from that. She now is in the process of still healing along with numerous hospital visits because of much diarrhea causing dehydration and very low electrolytes. She doesn’t eat much because she does not have much of an appetite. We are battling with dehydration and low electrolytes as I am typing this. Is there anyone with similar experiences or can contribute any helpful tips or information?

She has had a lot of bad luck . We have all had some but am sorry to hear that she has endured so much.

The bag should have given the resection the opportunity to seal and this must have ruptured . Let’s hope her luck turns around and the recovery continues without any nasty returns.

Hello. I do feel for your family. I recently had dehydration problems and was hospitalised for a week. My issue is my stoma output. Not a lot different, it's all out put. I now take 2 loperamide (Imodium without capsule) 3 or 4 times a day, supplemented with codine. These are all on prescription. My fluid intake is reduced to 1500ml including 800 of st Mark's solution. It's important to eat something, even a bit of toast. I hope this helps a bit. Importantly she mustn't put up with it. Keep going to GP/specialist nurse.

I was diagnosed with rectal cancer on the 18th of June and still have not been given a date for my treatment I am at my wits end and it has had an impact on my partner and family. I am a healthy non smoking active person who has always tried to look after oneself and feel very let down by the NHS . I feel like a statistic on a conveyer belt who just has to behave and wait their turn .
