Certain medications can increase glucose levels and they’re listed in the article below;

verywellhealth.com/list-of-...

The phenomenon of steroid induced diabetes for example is well known and understood in the diabetic community. However, it’s important to balance the need for blood pressure meds and cardiovascular risk with this issue. The fact that you’re pre-diabetic is important because you have the opportunity to turn this around and bring yourself back into range. CLL and diabetes don’t play nicely together so it’s important to try and keep your glucose in range.

My advice would be to adopt a lower carb diet which means a big reduction in potatoes, rice, pasta, bread, cakes, pies, sweets and very starchy vegetables. Concentrate on protein like cheese, eggs, meat, chicken, fish and despite the general advice, lower fat doesn’t work because for example, adding full fat cream to strawberries, actually slows down the glucose hit for diabetics and stops the level spiking. It can be done and isn’t as punishing as it sounds. If you have other comorbidities, it’s in your interest to do this. Another good tip is to take a walk after meals because this helps to regulate the insulin uptake.

Don’t be tempted to stop b/p meds but if the issue continues, ask your GP whether different meds might be preferable. Beta blockers seem to be a bigger culprit for raising blood glucose for example. I understand because I share the same issues.

Good luck,

Thank you my blood pressure tablets were indapamide 25mg changed to Lercanidine 10mg after the pre diabetes blood results

Yes I can see why your doctor changed you to Lercanidine which is a calcium channel blocker and believed to have less of an effect on hyperglycaemia.

Best wishes,

Pet-lamb, the important thing here is you are pre-diabetic which means it’s a wake up call, an opportunity to ‘nip it in the bud’. Surprisingly, not all type 2 diabetics are overweight but may carry visceral fat around the internal organs which challenges insulin effectiveness. With the right small changes you can prevent the need to go onto yet more meds for diabetes. View this as an opportunity. There’s clearly a familial risk with a close history of diabetes (as is the case for me too). You’re already doing the right things.

Ask the pharmacist what your tablets contain if you’re concerned about gluten.

You need to adopt a very low carb diet. It's as simple as that. If you do, the problem will go away.

If you want to understand diabetes and pre-diabetes more fully including recipe ideas, I found that books by Dr. David Cavan, MD are absolutely excellent and written in an easy to understand way. He even has audio books on the subject and his books can be obtained fairly cheaply from many outlets.
