Firstly, may I thank everyone for their good wishes and interest in my first post concerning my CAR-T journey.Well, after a rocky start searching for suitable veins, I am happy to report that my day of T-Cell collection (Apheresis) went well with approximately 250ml collected. Photo of my little bag of 'hope".
At the initial assessment of my veins a few weeks ago, it was intermated a femoral line may be needed as I do not have the best of veins. However, on arrival at the Apheresis Room I was told the Team would try to cannulate me first as this is the preferred option. To this end a portable ultrasound machine and a nurse very experienced in cannulation using this piece of tech, joined the Apheresis Team to assist in my cannulation. Even so, it took a long time and six attempts to find a vein in each arm that the cell separator machine "liked" and my vein didn't give up on. The skill needed to carry out the procedure was impressive.
It was a long day and tiring but what a result!
I was back at hospital the following day to discuss the bridging treatment whilst we wait for the cells to be genetically modified and returned. I am to resume taking Venetoclax, which was paused for the week prior to the T-Cell collection, and I am to have a weekly infusion of Rituximab during this period. There will be more visits to hospital and more blood work will need to be done (poor veins) but the clock is ticking to Day 0 when my T-Cells are returned to me.
I will do my best to post when there is further progress.
