Prescription Charges

Hi

A local Pharmacist told me, when collecting a ‘one off’ prescription, that I should be entitled to free prescriptions.

I have always been of the understanding that unless you are receiving treatment for your cancer this is not the case ? 🤔

My doctors gave me a medical exempt form for tree preparations as soon as I was diagnosed nearly 5 years ago, only started treatment 4 months ago

If you have a cancer diagnosis you can get free prescriptions whatever your age. You need a medical exception certificate.

Thank you … It was never mentioned by any of the medical professionals I’ve seen over the years, it’s been nearly 7, but then again I never asked !

Never mentioned to me either! It was only last year when I was constantly getting sick paying for prescriptions almost on a weekly basis that I thought there surely must be something for people like me, this is getting too expensive so I asked my GP and hey, yes! It was done in 10 seconds literally. Please ask you GP for it.

CLL can appear difficult to a lot of GPs, as the exemption form says a patient has to be “ under treatment” for a cancer to get free prescriptions. Because CLL, at the beginning, is often known as “watch and wait” it confuses everyone.

I was told that I was getting active monitoring for my cll so was absolutely entitled to free prescriptions.

However, around that time I hit 60 and so was entitled to free prescriptions anyway - which was nicest thing about being 60 lol!

Hi

Yes that’s how I read the form the pharmacist gave me hence my question.

The statement on the form is a little ambiguous and can see why it confuses Dr’s.
