CLL cronic cough

Hi to you all.

Watch and wait 11 years,no treatment just daily doxycycline to help with antibodies.

Over the past five years have had a mostly dry cough three times each time lasting five to seven months,on all three occasions i may have inadvertantly come in to contact with grand children who had the nasal flu LIVE vacine and wondered could this be the cause or the trigger for this cough.I know live vacines are not good for us and could make us ill but the info ive read is non specific.Wondered if anyone had any thoughts on this.Grandchildren now baned during vacine periods.

Thanks Mick

You should see your pulmonologist if you have persistent coughs. CLL can affect lung function as there are lymph nodes near the lung. Pleural effusion is often seen.

Hi Mick, I can only speak from my own experience. I have three small kids and they have the nasal flu vaccine each year (and also other live vaccines). I was advised to have my own jab prior to them having the nasal vaccine.

I never picked anything from them after they had the vaccine although my immune system is not functioning properly now and have been getting sick a lot. They have actually never had any reactions or side effects so my guess is that you probably pick up a virus elsewhere. Infections can drag for us with CLL...

Chronic dry cough … boy that’s a tough one to find a “cure”, but I happen to finally find one that worked for me.

After years of taking proton pump prohibitor (PPI) drugs that my docs thought my mild acid reflux caused the cough (but the PPIs didn’t cure the cough), I saw a very experienced ENT doc that suggested I try an all natural saline nasal rinse. Viola, it “cured” the dry cough! 😃

And… another benefit is my acid reflux doc recommended I stop taking PPIs, which I did. That’s been great to not endure its side affects.

So two birds killed with one stone. In US, I bought a sinus rinse kit called “NeilMed”, use it once a day in the morning. Does the trick.

Again it worked for me, I’m no doc, but you might want to give it a try? I know that cough is very frustrating!

Is NeilMed used in a Neti pot or is it just a nasal spray?

A simple nasal spray bottle

How is the humidity in your surroundings? Very dry air can induce dry cough. In which case an air moisturizer could help. Houses with floor heating during the winter time could cause this. Isn't doxycycline an antibiotic? What do you do to support your gut flora? It's likely damaged by the non-stop antibiotic treatment.

I also wondered about the gut flora. A healthy gut microbiome is important for good immune function.

Isn't humidity in UK more likely to be higher? I had a technician who was bothered by a dry cough. Taking cetirizine once a day to minimize a low grade post nasal sinus drip stopped hers. She wasn't aware of any sinus problems, but I was having some due to stuff in the air, I knew there was pollen and mold, and wondered if hers were occurring without any sinus symptoms like mine. I recommended the cetirizine in case there were mold spores in the sinus drainage irritating the tissue, loratidine doesn't work as well against molds. What time of the year is this happening? Any correlation to dryness/dampness, or pollens/molds/mildews?

It may just be caused by your increased lymph nodes pressing on the cough receptors in your lungs that trigger the cough reflex. Afaik nothing can be done about it, but then there's nothing wrong with your lungs either.

It might be an allergy rather than an infection. My husband used to smoke. He would use another room to smoke but it was affecting me. Even sipping water didnt help. I needed an inhaler to stop it.I have hayfever and need Cetirizine, a nasal spray and an inhaler prescribed. It causes asthma.

As your cough lasts a few months each year it could be something in the air causing it and even dust can cause coughs. You would know if it was an infection as it would be on your chest. Anne uk

Hi,

I had a dry cough for several months after a bout of pneumonia followed by the flu. Neither was the cause as I had no cough with either illness. I was referred to a respirologist who prescribed prednisone which got rid of the cough for the week I was on it. Eventually, a CT scan showed my spleen was "massive." At the suggestion of my hematologist, I started a clinic trial with Acalabrutinib to treat my CLL. My cough went away almost immediately. My doctor hypothesized that my spleen was so large that whenever I spoke it put pressure on my diaphragm causing me to cough. Later on I developed a different cough that also lasted a long time. For that I saw an ear nose and throat specialist who prescribed a 3 month course of Omeprazole that resolved it for me. No chronic coughs in the 5 years since.

My husband has the same issue and because of the CLL his immune system needs to work harder from all of the allergies. He has been in remission for the past 2.5 years , but he always makes sure to have a teaspoon of local honey everyday and he has a tablespoon of a homemade elixir that a local cancer center gave us to keep his gut flora healthy. It's mostly has apple cider vinegar in it.

The cancer center gave us the recipe for the elixir.
