Reaction to 5th covid jab

kitchengardener2 profile image

Hi not sure if I am worrying about nothing. I had my 5th covid jab this morning. I was given Moderna, my four others have all been Pfizer.

I commented on the way home that I could really feel this one, I had absolutely no reaction to the previous four.

My arm feels warm and I have a red swelling at the injection site.

Can I take paracetamol? I am being treated with Acalabrutinib.

Hi, not a doctor and don’t know you obviously, but I am on Acalabrutinib and take paracetamol regularly for headaches. Just half a dose at a time. I do recall having a paracetamol before bed when one of my jabs felt it might go a bit awry - so made sure it didn’t!! Hope you get a good nights sleep

Thanks for that. I am tired so hopefully will sleep.

You got a higher dose with Moderna, so a reaction might be more likely. I sure got them from all my Moderna shots. The Moderna booster is a higher dose than the Pfizer. The primary Moderna shots are 100 micrograms and their boosters are a half dose (50 micrograms). Pfizer's booster is the same size as their first two shots, with 30 micrograms of mRNA in each of them.

Advice from my doctor was to keep moving my arm around. “Inflammation involves redness, soreness and swelling. This occurs at the site of the injection which is done into the middle deltoid muscle of your arm. One way to reduce this reaction is to move your arm around to keep the vaccine and its reaction from being concentrated in one location It's counterintuitive, because it hurts more to move it, but it really speeds up the healing. shelteringarms.com/rehablog...

I hope you feel better soon! 🙂

I agree with moving arm around. I walk home ‘marching’ the arm that has been jabbed!!

Also you may want to lightly massage the injection site 💪🏼🍀

I can’t speak for the Acalabrutinib/paracetamol situation but I had a sizeable reaction to my 4th Pfizer jab yet nothing to No 5. Didn’t last too long.Peggy

Hi, I had exactly the same reaction, my arm was like that for about 6 days, I’m not on any treatment but I took paracetamol for a few days. Hope yours eases soon.

My arm hurt for a couple of days and then had a bad stomach upset, but that could be coincidental. I had Pfizer.Hazel

Hello. I wouldn’t want to advise you about medication and I don’t have CLL, but I had only a sore arm with my three Pfizer jabs and this time I had Moderna…my arm was very sore yesterday (after one day) and last night it began to feel very hot and itchy and was red with a lump ( a bit better this morning).

I understand that this might mean a good response to the vaccine 😉and it’s actually got the name, “Covid Arm”

I’m pretty sure you’d be fine to take paracetamol but, obviously, contact your doctor if you are unsure.

Paul, who does have CLL, had a headache and nausea for one day after his Moderna jab… I prefer the sore arm!

Best wishes,

Fran 😷

I had a terrible reaction to the Moderna booster. Sore arm was the least of my problems. Temperature, chills, fatigue, night sweats over two days. Just starting to feel okay. Hoping that counts for a few more antibodies

Moderna vax1and 2were pretty terrible. I was sick !!! Then after the booster I almost had to call an ambulance, definitely the worst sick I have ever been! Now my doctor thinks Evusheld I don't know about that suggestion Not very quick to say bring it on

Evusheld was okay, both Jan 2021 and Feb 2022. The first was before any MRNA vaccine and the second was after four.

Hi, I have had the exact same process and the sore arm/swelling took around 5 days to ease off, luckily I didn’t need any painkillers as it was more of a dull ache - williem 🙂

I had a massive red reaction to last two vaccinations. The last one gave me an armpit swelling the size of a tennis ball. Interestingly a lot of my vaccinator friends said to change arm for next one as they found this helped.

In both instances where my arm swelled it lasted about 4 days then magically disappeared.

Weirdly, although it hurt, I quite liked the fact that my body was reacting as I thought at least I was having an immune reaction!

I’m due for fifth and will have it on other arm.

Not had my 5th yet ( don’t know whether to or not actually) but after my Moderna arm was as you have described, so wouldn’t worry too much and paracetamol would be fine.Dave.

I got my first Moderna a couple of weeks ago ... I felt the injection, not the needle ... I felt the vaccine ... I described it as a 'chemical burn'.

I was on paracetamol for three days or so, as I experienced an overall 'ache' ... like a bad flu.

Ideally we shouldn’t take anything after a vaccination so as to allow for the immune system time to respond. Even if for us it is imperfect. The evidence that the fevers and inflammation is really what you would want from a vaccination. You don’t want to suppress it. That is not well taught. Especially in here in the States. But I learned about it here in this group that if you can tolerate the discomfort for a few days that it is worth it to hopefully gain a better immune response.

Paracetamol recommended by senior nurse at vaccination centre yesterday, if needed, for exactly the type of reaction you are experiencing. The 'sore arm' reaction is the most common side effect she said. I've certainly had it for 4 out of the 5 COVID jabs I've had including the one yesterday - eases up and clears after 2-3 days.

Glad to hear your feeling better!

I had 5th shot (Phizer) same day you got the mean ole Moderna (that one’s way more powerful… maybe what you needed?).

I’m just now feeling better too. I had a fever 🥵, it broke last nite and was feeling tired/achy all yesterday… same exact reaction I got from my past 3 Phizers which all fortunately led to tons of spike antibodies. Not so much with my first shot (J&J), antibodies waned away within 2 months.

Good luck with your shot and antibodies production!
