Troublingly super high b12, anyone else? Thoughts?

Maybe a bit off-topic, but related and many of you have such great medical knowledge. Tuesday at my 4 month visit (back to 6 months now), I happened to ask to have a B12 test, since they were already drawing blood and I thought I was maybe deficient. Test came back long after doctor visit. Level is twice the highest level, off the chart high. All articles I can find say it indicates either blood cancer (but NOT Cll) or solid tumor or else very bad liver or kidney condition. I contacted onc's office for advice, and got message back that, since blood work looked okay, no worry. I am now being one of those obnoxious patients who is persisting because I can't find any article that says anything but bad about this -- and b12 blood levels don't rise or fall in a matter of days but of months/years. So not the result of recent supplementation. My liver enzymes were a bit elevated but not enough to worry doc. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!

Hiya,

how high was high? can you tell us the numbers and did you have a folate (folic acid) level measured as well. If you did what were the results of that?

didn't do folate, didn't think to ask. B12 is 1490!

Hi Vlaminck, I have the same extremely high b12 and have never taken supplements. I have read that it’s because the body does not utilise the b12 so it continues to float around in the bloodstream causing the high reading. My haematologist is not concerned so I am not either now. I hope this helps and perhaps someone with more knowledge can give you a better explanation.

Thank you, Stefano1. Don't want to disturb your valuable peace of mind but I find it strange that literature says this can happen in other blood cancers (and other cancers) but not CLL. And if it's not being used but just floating around, would seem that one could still be deficient in b12 (which is what I thought I was). My doc did not have an explanation, only that I didn't show symptoms of other cancers.

Hi Vlaminck, thanks for your reply and I will ask my haematologist again but previously he did not think it a problem. Don’t worry about my peace of mind as I’ve had 8 years of various treatments and clinical trials so I’m happy to still be here. It would be nice if someone comes up with an answer to our query though. All the best for your good health.
