I am a 70 year old CLL patient in remission for 3 years after BR.
I have just had a flu jab so that's good but I am still a bit confused about the pneumonia vaccination.
I had pneumovax last year and I'm told that that's a one-off and I don't need any more. I have though read that what should happen is I get the prevanr jab first and then the pneumovax 2 months later.
My surgery tell me they don't do the prevnar so what does anyone advise please?
Thanks

There is a very good pinned post on the right by Paula about vaccinations and timings. Your surgery is being economical with the truth because the Prevnar is usually used on children. I had a problem when I asked originally. If insisting fails then pharmacy’s like Superdrug can do them.
I thought pneumonia vaccinations were 5 yearly...what my GP told me. I had the prevnar one too at the specific request of my haematologist otherwise I doubt it would have been given.
For the UK the reference for GPs and vaccinations is the "Green Book" which Newdawn mentions in healthunlocked.com/cllsuppo...

Snip: The NHS has recently (2019) written new recommendations for vaccines. Scroll down to the section "Vaccines for people with underlying health conditions"
This document is helpful to convince GPs in the UK that as well as annual flu jabs, we definitely need the two different pneumococcal vaccines PCV13 (Prevnar13) and PPV (Pneumovax23)..
I had pneumonia a few years ago and then diagnosed with CLL. I asked about pneumonia shots and my PCP said ok. I received the two shots a year apart and mt blood work still shows I’m ok with watch and wait as it relates to CLL. I hope this helps a little.
I had them in the wrong order and was told the same at reception. I took a copy of the pinned post to my next GP appointment and she agreed to the Prevnar. It was about a year after my Pneumovax and I had no problem, hope this helps
