My first question: is there a way to search CLL Support only? Sorry if this is obvious but if I try to search using a key word I get responses from all kinds of groups even though this is the only Health Unlock group I subscribe to.
My second question has to do with supplements. Last fall/winter I took vitamin D, zinc, and occasionally elderberry syrup. I managed to keep the viruses away even though my husband and daughter had a couple and even with my low IGg count. I have never asked if there were any issues with taking zinc (or elderberry) so I’m wondering about that.
I am also wondering if anyone here has tried taking bovine colostrum to help boost their IGg? I did try it briefly (my specialist said it wouldn’t hurt anything) but I don’t think it helped much. I have seen some convincing literature about it though. And I wonder how much this has been explored with CLL. The authors of these papers don’t say much about manufacturers so hard to know what to even try. Just wondering if anyone’s looked into this or...snake oil.
Thanks!
Misty

Colostrum is the first milk produced after birth and contains high amounts of immunoglobulins, boosting the immunity of the newborn. Bovine colostrum has been available as a health supplement for decades. It's also a neutroceutical being increasingly promoted. So it's surprising that I have never heard mention of it for boosting immunoglobulins in CLL. Hence it was interesting to read this recent report (a meta analysis of previous research papers) from Australian research:
Surprisingly, it's from a review commissioned by a dairy food manufacturing company in Australia, with the aim of marketing a powdered supplemental milk drink, fortified with whey and colostrum to adults ≥35 years. Yet this paper only turned up one accepable study from 10,000 papers with respect to Bovine colostrum. The paper concluded "Heterogeneous outcomes, high risk of bias and inconsistent findings resulted in inconclusive evidence to substantiate a food-health claim."
Who can argue with the final words of this paper? "Protecting consumers from misinformation and false claims should be a priority for regulators, researchers, and the food industry."
Good to know about elderberry. I’ll stay away from that one. I know there has been a lot of discussion about whether it’s good/bad for Covid but regardless don’t need to boost my lymphocytes!
Thanks for posting the article. I’ll take a look. My sense was colostrum was too good to be true. Would be nice to see some controlled studies with cll , though. It’d be great if it showed some benefit especially with the issues so many are experiencing with ivig shortage. Grateful I have been able to start my every 6 week ivig infusions.
