bone marrow biopsy
Hi Wonderfull,
My mom is about to get through the bone marrow biopsy. If your doctor requested it he assumes that the disease is progressing and you will need treatment. You definetely should have it. Check out other users comments on it, most say it wont hurt and you will have only slight discomfort.
Definitely proceed with the procedure. I have had it done and it was quite uneventful. You are given a bit of local anesthesia and then they insert the needle. It took 30-60 seconds as I recall and it was over. I had no pain at all. Good luck with the procedure.

If you look for a box labeled "Related Posts" you will see more than 5 previous discussions about Bone Marrow Biopsy. The box is on this page at the top of the right column on computer screens, or way below on mobile devices.

It is not clear in what country, medical system or type of doctor is treating you. Less experienced doctors in the USA will use CT Scans and BMBs to assess CLL patients, similar to the way that most other NHLs (Non Hodgkins Lymphomas) are monitored.
-
Our top CLL experts are using less invasive methods, with long term monitoring of blood results and physical exams only, to determine the patient's condition and need for treatment.
-
I have had 8 BMBs in the last 10 years, most as part of a clinical trial, and 3 to determine whether my treatment was complete and if I could discontinue Venetoclax. Of the 8, only 2 involved a strong electric shock like pain sensation for a few seconds, the remainder were uneventful. So it may be whether the sampling tool strikes a nerve or not.

You may want to ask your doctor to explain the purpose of the BMB. If the response is routine, assessment of your marrow involvement, you may want to suggest waiting until there is a decline in Hemoglobin, Hematocrit, or Platelets, or your Neutrophils are very low- the indications that your CLL is occupying about 90% +/- of your marrow spaces.

Mine was very easy. The anticipation was worse than the poke.
My husband's first bone marrow biopsy was very painful, so the second time they gave him conscious sedation and it was a breeze. it was necessary to determine what was going on after 4 infusions of BR, and neutropenia for almost 6 months.....it was determined that the CLL was over 90% in the marrow crowding out all the good cells.......ibrutinib was then prescribed.....
Standard procedure and essential part of getting right treatment. My consultant has warned me (with a smile) 'it will come when the time is right'......experiences appear to be very variable, so I hope yours is painless. Good news from HopeME is that it is relatively quick!
Definitely agree, if doctor suggests BMB, then it should be done. Had 3. Felt nothing. True...the anticipation is worse than the procedure. Good luck!
