My daughter had the kasai procedure last week and obviously I am now poo paranoid. She had 3 dark green poos after surgery but now they are very pale again? Is this normal? Do we just have to wait and see what happens in the next week or so or should they be dark already?

Hi, our daughter had the Kasai last year. She eventually had some paler stools a few weeks later due to cholangitis which is fairly common after the procedure; in our experience this often came with a temperature. If you're still in hospital then I'd ask the doctors, they might expect intermittent pale stools for a few days post-op or they might want to rule out cholangitis. Don't worry though - although I perfectly understand this is going to be impossible! - as these kids are monitored so well that any problem would be dealt with at a very early stage. Good luck x
If there is no fever and just pale stools I wouldn’t be too worried. The body has to adjust. My son was on two medications for one year. Bactrim and actigall. Bactrim is an antibiotic to prevent cholangitis. Actigall is used to help drain the bile into the intestines. My son is now 9, no meds, stable condition. There are days his stool is pale. I used to check after every bowel movement for years so I understand being poo paranoid . He has never been readmitted to the hospital. We just got for yearly follow ups. I know it’s scary, if you are really concerned you should contact the doctor. I hope your child is fully recovered.
Hello, can I know what was his alt and got values latest.. And how are you taking care of diet please suggest on the lifestyle.. My daughter is 2 now she is fine but her ggt and alt is still fluctuating how long will it take for the values to come to normal.. Kindly reply
No fever! Poos have some pigment now so my fingers are crossed... we went to kings college hospital and they were all absolutely amazing so I know they will keep on top of things. Thank you both for your replies. It’s nice to hear from people that have gone through what you have. X
Hi Anna you can register with CLDF online at Childliverdisease.org and we can send you an info pack. I would suggest speaking to your liver nurses if you have any concerns about the colour of your daughters stools. Lois x
Hi, how are you? how is your daughter doing? My baby had her kasai done 2 months ago. I'm in new zealand tho. Her bilirubin is still up and down above 20 LFTs are up and down too..
We are all good thank you. How are you? She is doing really well- she had kasai just over a month ago. Bilirubin is 67 and before it was 155 so it’s coming down. They say 3 months to clear jaundice. I don’t know about her LFTs. How is your baby?
Her bilirubin is around 20ish now but up and down in the last 4 weeks. LFTs also up and down ALT is raising to 300ish which make me really concern. But Dr says just to monitor her still. She's doing well otherwise.
I did have a call yesterday saying that her LFTs were still quite high... ALT was 220 and had only dropped to 215! I’m hoping next time it’s dropped a lot more!!
