frequent fever after kasai procedure
My little girl is 14 years post kasai. If your baby is getting fevers take them to see the pediatrician to rule out anything that could be making her sick. If your pediatrician can't find a cause for the fevers take her to the hospital and have them check for cholangitis and fluid in her abdomen. Nora (my 14 year old BA survivor) had chronic cholangitis and ascites. I hope this helps and that your baby girl is doing better.
my son is 7 months old and he had 3 cholangitis doctors say that its from a bacteria that exists generally in our intestines. what are the treatment or medication for this? i appreciate any suggestions or advises.
Hello, the doctors treating your baby will likely perscribe a course of antibiotics. In my child's case she was on IV ampicillin and gentamycin (spelling maybe wrong). Her course was usually 10 days long.
he is admitted now in the hospital due to blood infection cholangitis and he is treated with intravenous antibiotics ( Rocephin and Flagyl). he has ascites which is partially controlled by another medicine. his liver ans spleen are enlarged and he has also portal hypertension.
Enlarged livers, spleens, and portal hypertension is common for our kids because of their disease. My Nora (kasai 6 weeks old in 2005) still has all the above. She hasn't had cholangitis or ascites since April of 2005. Nora during her bouts of cholangitis was also on cortico steroids for inflammation of the liver. Had to have her antibiotic course exceed the taper dose of steroids and she was on antibiotics for 6 weeks IV total.
thanks for repling my questions i really appreciate it i hope your girl live a very long healthy life without any complications. however i didn't understand what does it mean "exceed the taper dose of steroids ?
Thank you I and I hope for nothing less than full recovery of your child. A taper dose of steroids means that the dose is decreased over a period days in order to avoid shocking the body. Steroids decrease inflammation and in doing so that also means that the immune system needs time to recover and do its job again. I'm by no measure a medical expert or professional. I'm just a mom who has the great blessing of giving birth to a child 14 years ago with an extraordinary set of medical issues.
Normally fevers are a form of your body fighting an "invader". Fevers are not normal, she could be fighting an infection. Take her to see her liver specialist, unless you feel comfortable with your pediatrician, but in reality it should be her liver specialist taking a look. Your baby is at risk of not only cholangitis, but some many different viruses out there especially now flu season. i wouldn't take any chances if i was you and either a)take her to see her liver specialist, or b)take her to the ER and demand for them to do blood work, and have a GI Team in charge of your daughter's health. I have a 3 year old kasai only daughter. Hope this helps.
Cholangitis infection is frequent after Kasai surgery and can trouble the kids specially during the first post op year. Regular assessment and liver function tests can help decide the future plan. Good nutrition is also important in managing such cases.
