Hi, can anyone tell me how does your child reacted after a biopsy, was it painful for them, how to explain a 7 years old what kind of a procedure he is gonna have and how painful it will be after. Thanks

Hi

Sorry to hear your child needs a biopsy. My daughter had some sessions with a community play specialist as she has learning difficulties and has a fear of procedures.

I think all children would benefit greatly from having these. On top of these we asked the play specialist at the hospital to come before the procedure and right up to threate.

Some children cope very well and are very understanding but this is what we see on the outside. A lot of children have fears or worries and may not say. Ask for a session before , they have dolls that your child can use to pretend they are doing a cannula, bloods, medicine, administrating the face mask. This really helped her understanding exactly what was going to happen.

My daughter had to have a second biopsy a few weeks later as they could not get a sample but that is rare. She did not have any pain, she does not take paracetamol and did not get upset or said it hurt.

Hope it helps, even if you don't think you need a play specialist there are children's books they can suggest.

Take careAnne & hope everything goes well

Anne

Hiya. Just tell them about getting a canula and falling asleep.

Just say they shoot a really fast dart and get a little tiny bit of liver .

Tell them that they have to lie still after. And can only sip water then eat soft food for a bit.

After Conors biopsy he was a bit sore so I asked dr for something else to give pain wise. Ended up being diamorphine.

I've learnt now and ask de to prescribe this as required when I sign consent form. That way u don't have to wait if they need it .

I'd make it a competition. Tell your Little one my Conor is 15 and doesn't have Emla cream. See who's the bravest etc.

After banding if needed they do feel like they have a sore throat. I use strepsils. Xx

My daughter is 6 and has had numerous biopsies. The procedure is quick. I found the NPO is the hardest and keeping her calm before procedure. She hates the mask that they put her to sleep with. She knows the drill so anxiety med is given right beforehand. One night stay to watch for bleeding and Tylenol administered for soreness but really no pain afterwards. She is normally right back to herself next day.

Hi there, my daughter is 8 years old and had a liver biopsy in june. The doctors were great and explained what they were going to before they did anything. The anisteiologist told her that she was going to fall asleep for a few minutes and it would all be over when she woke up, and asked her what she was going to dream about when she was sleeping.

She did great and came out of anesthesia very well. She did throw up from the anesthetic, but she was trying to do cartwheels a few hours later at home. They made us wait 4 hours after to monitor her.

I bought her a stuffy that she brought with her for the procedure and my boss had bought her a present and wrapped it up in special paper and told her that she could open it as soon as she was done. It worked like a charm, but the trick is making sure that it is wrapped.

The procedure that my daughter had was a lot quicker then I had thought and not very intrusive.

Good luck and I hope all goes well.
