Travel insurance for child with biliary atresia

Hi, am the mother of a seven month who has biliary atresia, and had a Kasai at 6 weeks. We are planning to go on holiday, and I normally get annual travel insurance. I was wondering whether anyone can recommend a good travel insurance company, dealing with pre existing medical conditions. Many thanks!!

I went with "paying too much.com". It was a bit of a faff claiming but at 600 pounds much cheaper than anywhere else.

We tried numerous travel insurance companies that were 'specialists' in per existing conditions, what it really meant was very very expensive!! It is best to try people you would normally go to , DirectLine, Post Office etc. If you are going to America expect to pay more than you do for the holiday but if you are going to Europe we usually pay about 3 times as much for our son as we do for the rest of us combined, about £60.

Many thanks, will have a look at both companies. We are travelling to Europe, so hopefully won't be too costly. My son is doing well, we take things day by day though, as we are still getting our heads around the diagnosis. Wishing you all a lovely Christmas!

Hi, we have undertaken several overseas trips with our daughter (BA, Kasai, now in good general health!) and our experience was similar to BridgetBen in that the specialist insurance company we rang (the one recommended in a CLDF brochure) was very, very expensive! We have instead used BUPA and Insure & Go, which were both reasonable. At the moment, we have an annual family travel policy with BUPA, which covers our daughter generally but NOT for any BA issues - if we are going to travel with our daughter, we have simply rung up and purchased an additional policy for the trip for her only, which does specifically cover her for complications due to BA. The most recent cost for her special policy was £37 for 7 nights in Greece. (Please bear in mind that availability of cover and cost may vary depending on your answers to the medical screening questions.) Hope this helps and happy travels!

Hi I have a 11 year old with BA and we find the cheapest option is Direct Line annual worldwide travel insurance - we have been to far flung places,Asia, South America, Lapland - you name it and never had to use the travel insurance for our son with BA - our other kids yes!! Specialist companies are way too expensive.... Have confidence to travel and good luck getting reasonably priced insurance.
