Just got a call this morning that kody Is being admitted next week for his endoscopy and banding done.. Kody has alpha-1 and portal hypertension. Just wondering has anyone has this done? As this is kodys first liver related operation I don't really know what to expect? Anything at all will be brilliant

3 year old with alpha-1 endoscopy/banding?
My boy, 5, has had several endoscopy and banding procedures. They have to be nil by mouth for a few hours, it seems to take about an hour to complete the procedure (at the most) and afterwards they're nil by mouth for a while, then clear fluids, then soft food etc.... The banding sometimes makes swallowing painful for a couple of days, where the food or drink passes the site of the bands. Ironically even swallowing the paracetamol syrup hurts but it probably helps with the discomfort. Bertie had two more meds to take for a month to protect the stomach lining and the site of the bands and prevent ulcers. Hope this helps and that Kody will be ok with it all.
Thanks for this has helped alot, this is all been pretty rushed so haven't had a proper conversion with his consultant or anything yeah when I was talking to gastro nurse on the phone she said they were sending out a medicine for kody to take?
Hello, I may be wrong but I think I met you at Kings ( rays of sunshine) it was a while ago but my son was having an endoscopy banding same time as yours if its the same Bertie! I think bertie had a baby brother? If Ive mixed you up Im really sorry. K

Hello My son is 6 now he has portal Hypertension, had 1st endoscopy and banding just after 4th birthday. we stayed in hospital the night before for them to check bloods ect. He had platelet transfusion as his platelets were around 50,000 and think they like them to be above 90,000 for banding. He had a General anesthetic did have quite a sore throat afterwards which made him cry which made his throat worse. Our surgeon showed me the photos of the varices and they grade them then gives a good idea how often you have to have it done. Oh and Jake was on ranitidine and another med cant remember the other name but it basically coats the stomach and Ranitidine reduces stomach acid. He stayed in the night after then he went home. Good luck to Kody hope he gets on ok.

Hi Kerry
Yeah we have to go up on the Wednesday to get his bloods done, kodys platelet level has never been great so maybe that's what there checking for but thanks for the heads up incase they decide to keep him in the night before I still haven't recieved the meds yet so not sure what it is he has to take though he is on tablets for reflux that he had to come off.. I'm expecting them to keep him in the night after then home as long as all is fine thanks for your reply x
The extra meds were ranitidine and sucralfate- both tasty, Bertie reckons!
Hospital rang me yesterday and they are admitting him on the Wednesday now due to his platelets being low in his last bloods! We have the sucralfate ready and all just waiting on it now.. Thanks again x
