Niacin is suppose to work. I think I might try it to see if it works for high blood pressure

Hi Jobarbar,

Firstly if your statins are causing you to have side effects then there is a host of on-line blogs promoting the case for not taking statins, not least as it's argued we actually need cholesterol and reducing it is both harmful and doesn't improve mortality necessarily.

As a starter here's a link to a video of, imo, one of the best.

Can't comment on red yeast rice I'm afraid.

No, but I have found Plant Sterols to be most effective. Stopped taking statins 9 months ago.

What Plant Sterols do you take?

Hi. I take 800 mg from Amazon. Two tablets once a day. Over time my cholesterol levels have dropped. My doctor seems quite content. Good luck!

Hi Jobarbar. The last brand I got from Amazon was Vitastore Plant Sterols 800mg. Good luck I hope it works for you. Certainly I have had no side effects which I did with Statins.

In actual fact recent research has proven high cholesterol to be of benefit as we get older and statins to be of no benefit to women whilst increasing the likelihood of diabetes.

Here are 2 links that bemoan the dangers of taking statins huffingtonpost.com/kelly-br... & drhyman.com/blog/2012/01/19...

High intake of omega 3 (and minimal omega 6) and potassium offers more protection than statins and removing carbohydrate from the diet reduces cholesterol levels. There are nutritional requirements for proteins (essential amino acids), for fats (essential fatty acids) but zero requirements for carbs.

Check out the, interesting for you, research on cholesterol in women explained in The cholesterol hypothesis is wrong by Malcolm Kendrick youtube.com/watch?v=8ls9HWR...

and Dr. Jonny Bowden's The Great Cholesterol Myth video for reasons why to remove carbohydrates from the diet youtube.com/watch?v=YGOpjPN...

This is gonna be long as I have soecial place in heart for gen high chol folks and spend my life researching to avoid the statin and have been on and off it. I too have genetic high choles/dyslipidemia and so when i take statins my good hdl chol also drops dangerously low. Its unfortunate conundrum of the genetic predisposed b/c its a liver gallbladder dysunction and were conctantly making more chol.

And yes we do need chol and i agree with research about dangers of lowering too much and damage of statins to cells mitochondria, liver and muscles, brain! But Too much is too much! So iam 44 and have 330 chol i do not take statins as of recently. If you decide not to as well you nust do whatever you can to help lower naturally and raise good hdl. And take care of artery health!

Red yeast rice works but have rake sig more of it to equal statin. If you do take it make sure take ubiquinol 100 mg. As red yeast affects liver, muscles same as statins (Ryr is where statin came from) and check liver enzymes as well. Yes niacin high doses at night works take at night with pm meal but also can affects liver..

I dont take it but I do oat derived beta glucan powder, milk thisle artichoke leaf, greens, green tea. (I get this all in mixture thru advanced bionutritionals-adv green formula) also take pantethine (not pantethenic acid) 900mg to drive up my hdl as rec by my naturopath. And kyolic aged garlic w/ lecithin. And course ubiquinol. And course get your greens in. Avoid processed foods and wheat.

Lots of other things too I could go on...

Onega 3s avoid unhealthy oils and grain fed meat..

Do what you can to help yourself stress wise big one! And help yourself heal emotionally.

Good luck❤

have you investigated turmeric at all? Statins are just one of many pharmaceutical drugs that it can equal or surpass - just 14 groups are suggested in this link naturalnews.com/041642_turm...

it is a marvellous herb, works for so many different things, fresh is best for most things. Ginger might also help - turmeric belongs to the ginger family so they have similar properties

Hi Jobarbar. I stopped statins cold 1 month ago as I realized I had many awful side effects. Started the C0Q10 Ubiquinol asap. Still have peeling on palms of hands but mostly gone. Some stiffness in fingers when I wake up but I can move and get outta bed.. I'm a vitamin nut have been all my life. There's plenty of niacin in what I take but not sure of red yeast rice. Mostly eat nutrasystem. Like it. Lost 80#'s high cholesterol can't imagine I have it any longer.. But stop the statins!! I was on a year had no clue the harmfulness it was wreaking havoc even on my muscles that I had left and now it may be permanent. I'm bummed. At 65 I'm trying to improve and hang onto what stamina and strength I have. Good luck.

How high was your cholesterol?

FYI you can just stop the statins cold turkey it will not hurt you but the C0Q10 helps immensely as statins eat any your body can produce after you turn 40. Yes body has problem with producing enough as we age. Any one over 40 s/b taking it. Specially if you took statins. 300-400mg a day for couple months. Also that's why I use the Ubiquinol CoQ10. Energy levels are soooo much better. Feel like energizer bunny.

If you would like to get off statins, simply stop taking them.

But reduce them gradually not cold turkey.
