I have had 9 days clarithomycin, but bronchiectasis worsened, then haemophilus influenza came back from sputum culture so 2 weeks of doxycycline 100mg per day given, still no improvement, then increased to 200mg doxy again, chest seemed to clear then 10 days later back with a vengeance. Waiting on sputum culture results back on 200mg of doxy and prednisone, any advice from any lungies out there. Would appreciate many thanks in advance😙

I had HI several times & have bronchiectasis. The sputum result should show which antibiotic works best & should be for 10days-2wks.I had Augmenting 625mg which seemed to get rid but Tbh it was only going on azithromycin 3x weekly that stopped continuous infections occurring.
Good luck!
I take azithromycin 3 times a week but have had to stop when taking doxy have been great for 4 years without any cultures but was exposed to workplace being refurbished and an exacerbation followed and ugly bug raised its head, will speak to Dr about changing antibiotics tomorrow, many thanks
Interesting. My consultant tells me to continue with azithromycin regardless of other antibiotics. 🤔
A few years ago, my GP told me to continue with azithromycin when on a course of other antibiotics and my consultant wrote to her to say that was incorrect. So now I always stop the azithromycin when I am on any other antibiotic. So which is correct?? Goodness knows!
Yes. I know. They seem to differ in their approach. I have been on azithromycin 3x a week for 12 years & although it's been very useful I seem to find. Other antibiotics very difficult to tolerate. 😕Stuck between a rock & a hard place!
It is strange isn't it? I am "off" azithromycin at the mo due to an exacerbation and on my rescue pack. I have been on azithromycin for 3 years now and found it brilliant. I am due to trial a summer of no azithromycin but as I have had two chest infections recently, that might be postponed. Lung function tests in May and seeing my consultant at the end of June, so I will ask her for her reasons. I realise that I am very lucky as I have had no problems so far on various antibiotics that so many people can't tolerate. Have a nice day. Pat 😀
What advice are you seeking?
Re reading it I think I get it. I have had the same issues. The answer from Lfpremier with the ongoing azithromycin helps. good luck.
Yes it can be hard to get rid of.i was immunized against it as had frequent hib infections.Asmy immunity is impaired , it only protected me for 3yrs +I got hib pneumonia last year.i was very ill for 3months+ on continuous doxy 2x day for 12/13 weeks + steroids.lungs were full + asthma + bronch very bad.persevere with antibiotics, you'll get there x
