I have been taking these tablets for three weeks As they have thinned the mucus and the colour of the sputum,

Now my G.P. says I stop and no longer need to take As I have been diagnosed with Bronchiectasis is this normal ? I thought I took it long term. Advice please ??.

i was prescribed them to help ease my mucous production with my bronchiectasis, but i found i produced a lot more and had a much worse night with coughing, i know it helps some people but i don’t know if its suitable for long term? I wish i could stop so much mucous production, as its embarrassing the amount of coughing and choking i do especially at night 😞

No it’s not normal. I’ve been on them for about ten years and I don’t produce much mucus. My respiratory consultant is the only one that would change this. Your mucus won’t get thinner just because you’ve been on carbocistene for three weeks. GPs in general don’t know much about Bronchiectasis and tend to let us get on with it with the guidance of our consultants.

hello Manicrose,

I’d agree with Mooka that it’s best to leave decisions like this to your consultant. That said, I’ve been taking carbocisteine for several years and I don’t think it actually helps very much. When I’ve run out for a few days or forgotten to pack them when away, I can’t say I’ve seen any difference. When I was in hospital for a different reason recently it was suggested I try having it delivered by nebuliser so I’ll ask when I next go to respiratory clinic. The nebuliser just with saline solution plus an aerobika device does help to clear my chest albeit briefly.

Good luck and best wishes

Hello again. Well it does seem that it’s been helpful to you and that’s a good thing! I’m wondering though if you should explore a referral to your local chest clinic with the GP? See what they say. Another helpful referral I had was to the physios for pulmonary rehab. You do it in a group so you get support and info from the physios and from other people’s experience.

Take care.

I took Carbocysteine when my sputum was do thick during a nasty pneumonia I had. I have never taken it continously as I believe it only works well in an acute phase. It made me quite dry and thirsty so had to drink a bit more which wasn't a bad thing.Probably helped with thinning the sputum.

I've been taking Carbocysteine for 12years 2x2 daily. The mucus won't dry up & go away so the medication is permanent. Linda 👍
