Thiamine?

Hi all, I wonder if anyone can answer for me? Thiamine 100mg three times daily prescribed. There's quite a price difference between Thiamine and Vitamin B1? Is Vitamin B1 the same as Thiamine? Anyone I ask doesn't seem to know the answer? Any advice?

Can you give more information? Who prescribed it and what for?

After a spell in hospital, it was prescribed. Had a seizure from alcohol consumption. Since discharge, no alcohol taken ( 8 months) but just wondered if it is the same vitamin.

Morning lighthouse 123.I myself take the same dosage of Thiamine, 100 mg three times daily and it is the same as VitaminB1. Although I found this answer on Google so I'd ask your GP for more information..surely they should know.

Thiamine is the chemical name for vitamin B1. They are the same thing.

They are the same thing. Long term alcohol use plays havoc with all vit B absorption. B12, B1 (Thiamine)and B9 (folic acid) are frequently prescribed for those with ARLD. I have cirrhosis and when first diagnosed I had to take all the above supplements. I’ve been abstinent since diagnosis and all my vit levels are now normal and I take no supplements. I make sure I eat a well balanced diet…foods rich in B1 are whole meal bread, whole meal pasta, lentils, peas, chickpeas to name a few. I make sure they are present in my diet.

As others have said, thiamine is Vit.B1.You mention cost, which is normally down to whether a branded or generic supplement is prescribed. However, the active vitamin ingredient in any variant will be the same, only the strength will vary, although the inactive ingredients in the formulation may differ.

I won't repeat the excellent advice from others but when diagnosed with cirrhosis 2.5 years ago I was given same regime ON PRESCRIPTION and continues today even after my TP mid 23. I'm over 60 so it's free so if you are 60÷ then should be good. If not maybe generic vitamins cheaper than NHS anyway. Good luck Gus
