Recovery after cholecystectomy

I had my gallbladder removed (keyhole surgery) a month ago. All went well but pain has been worse over the last week or so. I do suffer from chronic constipation which doesn't help, but operation sites, particularly navel, still very painful. Is this normal?

Hi Countrykitten,

The best thing to do is to check in with your GP or practice nurse. If you are an NHS patient you may not have a follow up with your surgeon - I didn’t after my surgery.

I had my gallbladder out by keyhole surgery in November and it took quite a while for everything to settle down. Although it is keyhole surgery and you are generally home within the day, it is still surgery and a trauma to your body. I had an infection in my navel wound, not that it was particularly painful, but it is the largest incision made! I managed to avoid lifting my granddaughter for six weeks which was difficult!

As the pain has not settled it is best to check it out. Take care x

hi I had my gallbladder out 4 weeks ago and all is well but I have “slough” around my belly button wound and it’s talking longer to heal, I carnt even hardly see the other 3 scars , the wound clinic are treating my belly button with “honey” swabs which is helping but I worried this is taking forever to heal. Is yours all good now ? Take care x

Hi JudJud, A course of antibiotics sorted it out! I hope yours is responding to treatment!!

Not normal. Please consult your doctor immediately. I'm concerned if there's any bile leak during surgery. Please consult with your doctor.

you should contact your consultant's secretary who did the surgery they should be able to follow you up as a wound check appointment if this was done via NHS.
