one month post op

I am one month out from my liver transplant, and am still in horrible pain, have lost 40 pounds, of which I did not have to loose, still taking OxyContin regularly, can’t sleep, and can’t eat solid foods. Any suggestions? Feeling absolutely miserable, and NO energy.

first thing I would suggest is contacting your liver team , go through the coordinators. It doesn’t sound right I had my transplant nearly 7weeks ago and I have pain if I move wrong or ask to much of my cor muscles but other than that I’m not in to much pain at all. 🤔

Good luck hope you get some answers.

Contact your coordinators and tell them exactly how you feel, I stopped pain killers when I left hospital at 2 weeks. You really need to eat especially protein as it helps with the healing process, you can get special drinks on prescription to boast your calorie intake ask your coordinators, will also help your energy levels. If you use Facebook please feel free to join our friendly and knowledgeable Facebook group called liver transplant support uk, thousands of people that have been in your situation.

Hope you feel better soon.

If you can't eat solid food what are you eating?

Dear Rubyrebe

As others have suggested, we would encourage you to speak with your transplant co-ordinator or a health care professional about this, this is a question that a health care professional is best placed to answer, as only they have access to your medical records.

We also have some information on our website about life after transplant:

If you [are in the UK and] would find it useful to talk things over also open Monday to Friday from 9am to 3pm on 0800 652 7330 (excluding bank holidays).

Best wishes

I remember being told by one of my surgeons that I should no longer feel the need to take painkillers after about 3 weeks, but actually for me it was 3 months. I was in so much pain that I would be crying at some point every day. I thought it would never go away, but it did.

Everyone's experience is different.

Definitely contact your coordinators, about your pain, lack of energy, and also how you feel mentally - perhaps you could receive some counselling.

I think I remember weighing about 85kg before transplant, and only about 65kg afterwards, which is such a huge drop I question my memory/sanity; since then I have slowly put all the weight back on, so now I am overweight again.

I just had to google oxycontin - I wish I had been prescribed that, as all I was taking was paracetamol.

Sorry to hear you are feeling so miserable, which I guess in understandable in your situation. One month is still very early days. I am about 6 years post tx. It is a very big operation and recovery can take a long time.
