6 and a half weeks post op

Hi everyone, I'm 6.5 weeks post liver transplant and still bleeding from op wounds. one small area being packed with a healing sterile gauze. Has anyone else experienced this problem? I am eating plenty of protein and drinking a protein drink to aid healing, also eating a very healthy diet with far more than the healthy 6 a day. This is hampering me getting back on my feet properly to try to start getting some muscular strength back.

I know a couple suffered with weeping wounds for a while... Are your transplant hospital worried about it?

And believe me don't be rushing it will take a long time to get your muscles back it's more important your insides heal first and that takes months x

I had a large hematoma after the op and they had to remove a few of my staples to let the gunge out. I came home after 12 days with staples and two drains still in place. so things have improved a lot, staples out, drains out but the place where the staples were removed early is proving to be stubborn. District nurse calls again later this afternoon to take a look and change dressings. At last clinic I said that the district nurse had requested that someone take a look at it because there was some swelling. Surgeon said it was because of the hematoma and nobody looked at it! Today I am hoping for better news when the dressings are changed because this is the first time that blood has not been showing through the dressings (so fingers crossed). I am probably being a bit impatient about getting back on my feet because it's been a long 4 years. First diagnosed with HCC, two procedures of TACE, 3 years of it on TACE2 drug trial with some pretty nasty side effects from the drug Sonaferib. So I seem to have seen more of my bedroom walls than anywhere else in the last four years and am weak with muscle loss and tired and am longing for that day that I can start trying to rebuild some strength. Thank you for your reply.

Sounds like a long drawn out illness like myself so I do understand your frustration so I hope you take this the right way .... You will get back some normality but it certainly won't be in a few months it will take a year or so, you have been poorly for a long time if you do too much too soon you will knock your progression back just pace yourself, you will know if you have done too much as you will feel it.. remember the fairy tale about the hare and the tortoise 😁

District nurse came today and the last part of my wound is now beginning to heal. I will take your advice and take things slowly, I don't want to knock myself back. Slow but sure shall be my motto and then I will win the race. Thank you for your sound advice.

Oh Alfred 😬. Do you think the drug trials worked - despite the side effects? Yoiks!

As long, I suppose, as you don’t keep worrying about the thought you may have paint those darned bedroom walls. I Remember (funny how I can recall years ago - but yesterday? No way) once, when I was a student ( a very very long time ago when we plastered our room walls with posters!) I got real flu and when I came around had to rip all the posters off the walls because of the memories..)

On that cheer ful note - sorry - I hope you feel bettor soon.

Hi two smiles. I really can't say about whether the drug trial did any good because the trial closed early and very suddenly because they said that there was no conclusive proof that the drug sonaferib used alongside the TACE procedures was doing any good. I like to think that it helped to keep me alive otherwise I would have to face the fact that I maybe went through 3 years of great discomfort and muscle wastage for sweet nothing!! Now I have my new liver, I'm feeling better than I have for probably 5 years, just the probs with the op wounds now, which in actual fact seem to be greatly improving since increasing my protein levels. Wound is much smaller now and I reckon in about a week could be healed! As for bedroom walls, I've counted every pattern on the wallpaper and when the ceiling light is switched on in makes lovely patterns on the ceiling, 68 of them to be precise. Amazing the things you notice when you've naff all else to do!!! Anyway onward and upward now for both of us!

Hi Twosmiles. I feel even better today. Haven't had any pain killers for nine hours and at the mo don't feel I need any. Still leaking a bit but not hurting. As for you being a ratbag, lol, I have been likened to Alf Garnet and Victor Meldrew many times over the last few years! Today is my best day so far post transplant, so good to have a day feeling like this! Hope your day is good too.

Hubby was worried about his drains after his transplant as he had a drain in for 2 weeks...especially when it started filling up quickly but his team said it was nothing to worry about as it was fluid from ascities, dead blood clots as had a bleed during the op

What have your team said

Yuiop profile image
Yuiop in reply toAdelou

I was under the illution ascities would stop after transplant!

Adelou profile image
Adelou in reply toYuiop

It does but during the op they drain some off but you may still have some around your body as it gets through blood vessels & into cavities such as inbetween your intestines, in your lung, legs, testicles...hubbies were huge & heavy

I got ascites again about 6 months after transplant for around 3 months so don't be surprised if you do get it

Hi Adalou, yes all very similar. Just one small part still being stubborn and having to be packed with healing lint and dressed.

I have not experienced it but met another transplant patient who did and it did settle down in a few weeks. all the swelling just went in about 3 weeks

So keep on it should all be fine

Hi David, swelling at last has all gone, just a stubborn bleed now that gets aggravated if I move about too much but hoping for better news later when district nurse calls.

in reply toalfredthegreat

Hey alfred

Stop moving!

Oh my I’m so facetious. Sorry🤭

Seriously, they kept telling me it would stop “soon”, it did about 3/4 weeks later
