My liver guy has prescribed Alendronic Acid following my DEXA scan. I'm pissed off as I really thought I had calcium covered. I'm a fussy vegetarian that practically lives off cheese on toast and milkshakes ! Most of the stuff I've read on the web refers to osteoporosis in menopausal women, so I'm looking for a liver perspective. Is bone density a common problem for people with compromised liver? Side effects ? I'm already stressing about hair loss !

Deep breath, the doctor wouldn’t prescribe it unless it’s going to help you. You only take one tablet each week, hardly a hardship lol. Bones are not just calcium, you really need to talk to a dietitian about your diet! It sounds unhealthy! Good luck
Hi billyde, yes unfortunately osteoporosis is common for people with liver failure, I have cirrhosis due to alcohol and I have to have a zoldonic acid infusion once a year to strengthen my bones, I am 3 years sober now but as I am not getting enough calcium in to my system due to my liver, I also take calcium tablets twice a day and fultium-d3 once a dayand di hydracodein tablets to stop the pain from the osteoporosis, all due to my liver.
Hi, I’ve been taking it for around 5 years now. You only take it once a week so it’s not really a big thing and if it has been prescribed then you obviously need it. I have had no hair loss at all. Don’t stress, just take it!
Yes, Ostroporosis is linked to liver disease, not just cirrhosis, that’s why they do regular dexascans. I’m prescribed vitamin D and calcium to try and prevent it.
This is going to sound weird but get your teeth checked and any treatment done before you start taking Alendronic acid. My Mum was on it and had real problems getting dental work done afterwards because it increases the risk of necrosis. The doctor didn’t tell her this although there is guidance.
This is what I'm worried about. No-one told me about the issues with teeth and now I need an extraction. I'm scared.
Well my Mum worried just like you, she had the dental work , I can’t remember exactly what it was but I know it want just a filling or a crown, and was fine. She followed the instructions about mouth rinsing to the letter and had no problems, so try not to worry. You have to weigh up the risks v the benefit and there are risks to not having the tooth removed and getting an infection. Once you’ve decided try and put it to the back of your mind. Easier said than done I know
P.S. She didn’t lose her hair though!
True 😊
