scan showed fatty liver

So I recently had a scan following some pains 4 months after having a c section.

I have also been getting really bad back, upper abdomen and shoulder pain on the right side, hunger pangs, nausea and extreme tiredness.

The GP called today to discuss scan results, she said I had fatty build up on my liver, blood tests are normal. All she said was to lose weight. Didn't give me any information or guidance whether it's reversible or what diet is the best so I am feeling a little lost.

Fatty liver should indeed be reversible, it's good that your bloods are normal because that would indicate that hopefully it is just fatty liver without any inflammation or other issues. The British Liver Trust has a wonderful publication entitled "Treating Fatty Liver with a healthy diet and physical exercise" which will probably fill in that gap of what is the healthy diet for fatty liver. britishlivertrust.org.uk/wp...

Plus an excellent page about NAFLD (non alcohol related fatty liver disease - the fastest growing cause of liver issues in the Western World). britishlivertrust.org.uk/in...

The benefits of a Mediterranean Style diet have been explored in liver studies too. britishlivertrust.org.uk/ea...

All the best, Katie

The good news is that yes, lose some tummy weight, new diet etc and Fatty liver can be kept in check. Try not to panic they believe that more than 30% of people have some sort of fatty liver. Maybe you should try to get a Fibroscan as that will tell you the extent of the fat cover and fibrosity. Your bloods are good which is always a positive

Hi,

I was in a similar situation to you last year. A month after having my baby by c section I started to feel unwell and have pain in my upper right quadrant and shoulder. I had an ultrasound which showed mild fatty liver, however my bloods were within normal range. My GP gave no advice and said that he was 99% sure the pain wasn’t coming from my liver. Fast forward to now where I have been eating healthily and exercising more and a recent ultrasound showed no fatty liver and the pain has now gone. I would definitely say that eating better and exercising is the way forward. It will take time, but hopefully you will notice the pain will become less and less like I did.

Good luck x
