Pain in liver - fatty liver

Hi a few years ago I have been told after scan and blood test that I have fatty liver cause I'm over weight and must start excercising and follow a diet plan. I started but then stopped and I have had pain on the right side under ribs for 2 days now. I'm also nauscious and get headaches. So I got a fright and decided I must start doing what I was told years ago. How long before the pain will subside or must I rather go for a follow up test. There is no meds they can really give fir the pain - I must just eat right and in time the inflamation will heal- or wont it? Thanksfor any help on this issue.

With almost no exception, exercising and eating well can only do you good. If you’ve not worked out much before, start slowly and keep your doctor in the loop about how you feel. There is “good” pain and “bad” pain.

If you did not set a follow up plan with your doctor but it’s been a few years since your last visit, checking in is probably a good idea.

Hi thank you for your reply. Yes I have decided to make appointment tomorrow. He's usualy booked months in advance so I will have to wait awhile. The pain is on day 3 now and not subsiding at all. In the meantime I will continue my healthier eating plan and moderate walking. I have never had this severe pain before so I am sure the liver is inflamed. It's very swolen and pressing against ribs. I know I have not listened and just hoped it would never get so severe. So I am guilty. But what I need now is support and I will do my part. Thanks again.

Don’t beat yourself up (I’m trying to tell myself the same thing). Just focus on doing what you can now.

Hi its me again. It's been two weeks since the pain under my right side ribs started. I ggot appointment finally at Dr for Monday the 5th of March. I am so scared. The pain has changed abit. I still feel bloated and the area under and around my ribs feel hard and sensitive. The pain goes sometimes to the back area. I can't even put my hand ond the areas where I feel the hardness. Its so touchy. I started itching a few days ago but now it stopped. I'm still following a healthier diet. But I wish it was Monday so I can know for sure whats happening to me.Please think of me. Feel so alone. Worrying so much.Regards Salome

Best wishes definitely with you. Very glad to hear you got an appointment to follow up. Try to take some comfort in that you're pursuing the issue as you should and have made the beneficial step of eating a healthier diet.

Thank you. I will let you know as soon as I get results. It feels as if someone took a brick and inplanted it under my ribs. You know I never thought in my whole life that a liver can get so bad. Thats why I never realy listened to the Dr who said I must loose weight. But as you said we're just gonna focus on the now and keep on hoping that the damage can be reversed. If not we'll tackle the next hurdle. How are you doing?

I'm also trying to focus on the 'now' and getting my appointment in order (my follow-up has been rescheduled on me 3 times now!). Let's both keep our fingers crossed.

Hang in there. Let me know how it went. I'm laying in bed next to hubby. He's fast asleep. I rarely sleep at all these days. It's almost 22:46 and I need to switch off my brain. Goodnight😴💤

Hi M8118. I was in hospital for 2 days for tests to find out if this pain I've been having gor the last 2 weeks is liver related. So after blood tests to test liver activity and ensymes and CT scan and gastroscopy(for my excisting hernia and stomach acid) they finally - after poking me and pressing on the areas that hurts and needles and drip etc- found that the reason for this pain is inflamation in stomach lining due to exessive acid in stomach. Although I take an acid reflex pill every day and my liver is still very fatty but ensyme levels normal and no scarring as yet. They have ruled out appendicitis and gallbladder issues and checked all intestines and organs. I' m home and still in alot of pain but on anti inflam pillls and pain pills. Follow up in April. They also said that my hernia can cause pain, but I still can't believe the pain I'm experiencing is actually from stomach area??? Strange. If pain continues after a week I am going back. They did poke me with sonar equipment quite hard and now I think my intestines and ribs are sore because of all the fiddling in the areas where I told them I am experiencing pain. I am thankful that I can still reverse fatty liver decease by dieting and cutting out excessive fat, sugar and starch. That CT Scan is amazing. They even found small cist on ovary but it's not serious. I am finally in my own bed. I hate hospitals and needles etc. but I was scared and had to find. Hope your appointment is full of hope for your condition. I must try to switch off and sleep. Still not sleeping as well as I should. Keep well. All the best. Salome

Very glad to hear that everything on the liver front checked out well!

As for the stomach pain, I find it somewhat remarkable how hard it can be to pin it down... how pain can seem to migrate. Hopefully it all gets under control for you quickly!

Well I see it this way- the Dr's are only human and they rely on tegnology, medical science, years of study, as well as years of expertise to tell us whats wrong and the prognoses and hopefully they are right. I also think it strange that pain can apear in another place so far from original source. Weard! I'm also doing some research into irritable bowel syndrome. Thanks for listening. You know sometimes people who are not in our situations do not understand. My husband sometimes say in a joke- " It's all in the mind" but I know it's not. I also realise stress has a huge influence on our bodies and minds, so we must try to find a way to cope with stress. They say it also causes alot of issues in the body. Some of which is pain in the spastic colon for example etc. I tend to stress very easily. So to get that under control would also help alot. Meditation maybe or relaxing music etc might help. We live in such a fast paced world these days and if you can't keep up you will stress. I so wish we could move to the country side to a small town and settle there for our pensioner years. But alas my husband still needs to work a few years. I can see the stress is also getting to him - he had to work while I was in hospital and he was worried sick. But anyway. Another sleepless night over. Gonna try to get some sleep now. Keep well and let me know how u are doing. Regards.

"It's all in the mind" - I've been thinking about this a lot lately, and there's no denying that the mind and gut are so linked. It seems that many GI issues can be caused by stress/worry... and the pain that creates is VERY real. It may START in your head, but that certainly doesn't mean it can't lead to real physical issues. Wouldn't it be nice if we could just tell ourselves "Don't worry!"

Yes, it would be great just to have thoughts like: "What will be will be" and "I don't have to worry, there's nothing I can realy do about it" and "we all have to die one day" But we'd rather stress ourselves into a coma and yes I do think we create stress in our body that leads to pain. You are right. Imagine if positive thinking could heal? We should try that😀

You need to start looking after yourself & do what the Dr says & lose weight! you don"t want to end up like me with chrrioss! The pain you are desribing is from fatty liver! Like me! I have starting losing weight & The pain in my side is loads better :) when I get it I have Tramdol & have needed Morpine! Please do something about it now before it gets worse! You can get support to help lose weight, I understand how hard it is, but the reward is worth it :) I am having a fibroscan & a endospey ( Camera down the thorat) Very unplensent! To help Dr know how bad the chrroiss is! it looks like it"s early! but losing weight will slow it down :) I have joined weight watchers & it was the best thing I have ever done :) I am saying this to help you!
