Internal Bleeding

Hallo :) On June 13th, I underwent a gastroscopy, which showed the presence of hiatus hernia and hypertensive portal gastropathy, as well as gastritis. Multiple duodenal biopsies were taken at that time, which were normal. Last week I underwent a colonoscopy, which more than explained the heading to this. Without being graphic, there was enough red to cause the terrible anaemia (and the rest) which I have been enduring, despite the numerous blood transfusions (With iron!) I was still feeling wretched (Not least because of various co-morbidities) The, in direct contrast to the red, the other 'quadrant' was grey and, somewhat necrotic. Tumours and markers were mentioned, and was given a booklet, the cover of which displayed a logo for Macmillan Nurses. I am waiting for the results of the biopsy and remain philosophical. I must also undergo an investigation of my bladder. My main concern is terrible brainfog. I am told that along with my list of other medical conditions, this presents as being complicated. Perhaps not so for visitors to this forum? I wish you Hope and Happiness, Jon

Hello, the presence of hypertensive portal gastropathy suggests that you have portal hypertension. This is usually associated with severe liver disease, but there may be other causes leading to portal hypertension. In portal hypertension blood from the intestine bypasses the liver through various shunting vessels and intestinal toxins and ammonia aren't neutralized in the liver. This leads to the appearance of symptoms of hepatic encephalopathy (HE) of different levels. Brainfog can be associated with both anemia and possibly HE. In addition, internal bleeding and intestinal absorption of blood breakdown products can lead to increased symptoms of HE. You need to talk to your doctor, maybe he will adjust your treatment.
