I have a growth on my foot caused by hereditary gout not helped by the diuretics I take. It is painful and I struggle to walk on it. I was to be operated on in July 2020 but at the last minute the surgron said No because the hospital pre med team didn't order platelets. I was in theatre when this occurred
I have now had another appointment and have been told if I go ahead with surgery I risk my liver reverting to being decompensated because of the anaesthesia . I was told that if the wound won't heal I could risk amputation. I was told that if I opt for a spinal block I could bleed into it and become paralysed. I was also told that I risk a major bleed and possible death. I am confused, stunned and don't know where to turn. I get it that they have to warn of complications but no-one in their right mind would go ahead with surgery if I don't I cant walk and am in constant pain. I also asked about a new drug that is freely available and mitigates for the need for platelet transfusion. I was told that the haematologist in charge says I am not serious enough to warrant them giving it to me. Suspect money is the case behind that decision. I have worked hard over the last 3 years to get my liver in the state it is in and it appears that according to them I could end up at square one and possibly ruin my compensated liver. Also that I am risking sepsis and death.
