Im going in to hospital today having my assessment for my liver transplant. I'm a bit worried about the tests, I'm especially worried about the treadmill as i dont walk very well because of nerve pain 🙃

Hi Ozzie, is it definitely a treadmill at your t/p unit? At Edinburgh they do a exercise bike for the heart stress test & it is also possible that they do it with medications if you are physically unable to walk well - they can recreate the heart stress test without physical tests - not sure who it was on here that had it that way (Miles possibly) but it is possible so something you can discuss with t/p co-ordinators/transplant consultant as the week goes on.

All the best with your assessment,

Katie

It's standard Ozzie, I hated blowing into the tube, testing the lungs. It took some doing. You will be fine, they won't have you jogging or anything. Everyone is nice and helpful..

Good luck...

Hi Ozzie I had to do an exercise bike assessment🥴 and at the time was completely mask phobic! Pre Covid times! I was very worried, but they take everything into account👍

How did you find the lung function test? I’m particularly worried about the bike part so trying to find out as much as possible…

The lung function test is separate from the bike test and involves lots of blowing into tubes - doing your peak flow, expending all your puff in one go and other things. Hubby was away for 20 or more minutes doing that one at his liver transplant assessment.

The bike/treadmill test is more of a test for your heart with sticky pads on your chest etc as you cycle/walk - though you'll have a mask on for that too monitoring your lungs. In people who physically can't actually cycle/walk they can replicate the heart stress test with various drugs.
