Hello my liver friends. My wife and I are planning a trip and one option wassss the UK? However, our cdc is saying to avoid travel there! Is covid that bad over there?

At the moment yes Omicron variant of Covid is sweeping the UK at the moment with 183,000 reported new cases today alone. Whilst it seems to only give a fairly heavy cold as the main symptoms it is very rife just now and many of the earlier restrictions are back in place - mask wearing etc. Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales have different restrictions in place than England but yes Covid is high in the UK just now with an even bigger surge still anticipated after Christmas and New Year gatherings.

Thank you Katie. I’m already nervous about traveling since I have the very early stage of cirrhosis with a meld of 8. However I’m trying not to let it stop me from doing something I’ve never done such as travel outside the states. Not even sure if my doc would be ok with it but I can’t live in a bubble. I suppose we will have to revisit traveling to the UK.

Certainly worth coming once Covid is on the wane. If you were to need medical care during your trip over it might be difficult to access with our NHS being severly stretched at the moment but this can't last forever and you'll love a visit to the British Isles.

I get the same information when I look to travel to the U.S. :) My friend lives in Bend Oregon and he said even when the figures were very high there, people were still out in bars and nobody kept social distances or wore masks. He said there was a lot of antivaccine people as well.

I think here, we do have rapidly rising case numbers but the hospitalised numbers are relatively low which just goes to show how important vaccination is. I think it would be reasonably safe for healthy people with 2 or more vaccine shots to travel but anyone with an underlying condition will always have an increase in risk.

I think it will be years until we have adequate research on covid and long covid, and, as much as time is rapidly dwindling, we should maybe hold off a little longer before venturing out.

I never expect to survive the flight anyway, I've had too many near misses and I think, in life you only get so many warnings :) but... at my age, my last thing on my list is a tour of the U.S. so I'll probably have to take the risk at some time. Hopefully by summer, things will start to look a lot better.

I wouldn't go, it's not worth the risk.

Hi,

Unfortunately, there were 179K Covid positive tests two days ago in the UK. We would suggest to be very cautious about travelling to the UK at the moment and to take medical advice.

Warm wishes
