Hello everyone, my daddy has a liver failure. He is 68 yrs old from Nigeria. I'm so depressed right now because as of now, he's in coma. Please which hospital in the UK would one recommend? After he gets to the hospital, is there something we should know? Please is there any hospital that can perform the surgery without any delay because my dad needs a transplant as soon as possible. His condition is really critical! I don't know what to do. Please help me! Any advice will be highly appreciated.

Sadly your father is unlikely to be able to be treated as you hope in the UK. We have the National Health Service which is government (and contribution funded through taxes and National Insurance) if your father is not a UK national or hasn't contributed here then he won't be elegible for NHS care. The organ transplantation programme in the UK is all NHS work. Although some of the big London Hospitals do provide private health care if you can afford the massive costs ............. though this is unlikely to provide a liver transplant.

Really sorry to hear of Dad's condition.

Best wishes to you all,

Katie

Thank you very much for your reply Ayrshirek. Please how much does the private health care usually cost? Just a rough estimate would be fine, and is there any other country you might recommend apart from the states?

I can't recommend any other country as I only have knowledge of the UK NHS. Another poster was recently talking about Germany being good although private health care costs could be into the hundreds of thousands of pounds.

Thank you very much. That was really helpful! God bless you.

€300000+ for Germany, I looked into it.

Plus after care and life long meds etc. At the end of the day they still need to get admittance to Germany, be fit enough for t/p etc. etc.

Chances of getting a transplant in the UK unless you're an EU citizen are near zero unfortunately. The cost of a private liver transplant in the UK I believe comes to around £500k including pre and post surgery care. London Bridge Hospital seems to be the only/one of the few hospitals that can carry out the procedure privately and even then it has to be a living donor option for international patients.

I would look at having the procedure done in India as they have world class specialists and the cost is considerably lower compared to Europe or USA.

Tried that one as well, plenty of B blood in India, you need to bring your living donor with.

Is there really enough time for a matching liver to be found considering this man is already in a coma and is he likely to survive the operation ?

Hi udo123ka,

I am so sorry to hear about your father.

You don't say where you and your father are currently living.

I don't think there is anywhere that a liver transplant would be done on a person in a coma. From what I have seen on this site, it is very important that one be healthy enough for transplant surgery and the follow up drugs.

My sympathies and best wishes,

Mary

So Sorry, God be with you and your family. I believe you will see Him again.

I am sorry to hear about your father's demise, the present criteria for having a transplant is normally restricted to 65 years old, but l think this maybe changed if the person is relatively fit. They have undergo a fitness programme to see if they are fit enough to undergo the five hour operational procedure. There maybe other factors that need to be considered before any surgeon will risk surgery. This will be the case for any private or government funded healthcare trust.

Sorry to hear that Udo, I felt when you first posted that transplant was a sadly unreal expectation in that Dad was already so very poorly.

As you say he is with the Lord now, at peace and no longer suffering.

Lots of love to you and your family at this sad time.
